Child of Edgar and Unknown:

Narrative

Edgar was the last male member of the house of Wessex. He was elected king in 1066 after the death of Harold II, but he submitted to William the Conquerer who treated him well.4

He was only about 13 or 14 when when he was elected king by the witan on 14 October 1066. Edward, the Confessor, had nominated Edgar as his heir, but when Edward died, Edgar was too young to defend the country against the pending invasion. His election as king after Harold's death was no more than a token of defiance. He was forced to submit to William at Berkhamstead in either late November or early December 1066. In 1068 Edgar joined Edwin and Morcar in a rebellion and when defeated fled to the court of Malcolm III of Scotland. The next year Malcolm married Edgar's sister, Margaret, and agreed to support Edgar in his attempt to claim the English throne. Edgar made common cause with Swein, king of Denmark and nephew of Canute, who believed he was the rightful king of England. Together they invaded England in 1069 capturing York, but did not proclaim the independence of Northumbria. William marched north, devastating the land as he went. He paid the Danes to leave, whilst Edgar fled to Scotland. Edgar remained there until 1072 when William reached a treaty with Malcolm which included the exile of Edgar. Edgar eventually made his peace with William but never gave up his dreams of regaining the throne of England. He supported Robert, duke of Normandy, against William in 1091 and again found himself seeking refuge in Scotland. He supported his nephew, Edgar, in gaining the Scottish throne. In 1099 he set off on crusade and was later taken prisoner at Tinchebrai in 1106 fighting for Duke Robert against Henry I. He returned to England where Henry pardoned him and he retired to his country estate in Hertfordshire. His niece Edith (renamed Matilda) had married Henry I in 1100. He is remembered now as only the "lost king" of England.5

Children of Edmund and Algitha:

Narrative

Edmund II was the son of King Ethelred the Unready. When Ethelred died, Edmund was chosen king by the people of London, but Canute II, king of Denmark, who was leading an invasion of England, secured the support of the council (witenagemot) at Southampton and of Edric (flourished 1001-17), Ethelred's son-in-law. Edmund met the Danes in battle, winning several engagements and relieving Canute's siege of London. He was defeated at Assandun (now Ashington), however, through the treachery of Edric, who had pretended to desert Canute. A truce was arranged between Canute and Edmund; Edmund was permitted to rule the south of England until his death later in the year, when it reverted to Canute6.

Children of Æthelred and Ælfgifu:

Children of Æthelred and Emma:

Narrative

Ethelred II was the son of King Edgar and half brother of Edward the Martyr. His reign was marked by bitter military struggles. After negotiating a treaty with Richard II, duke of Normandy (reigned about 996-1026), Ethelred married Richard's sister Emma. This marriage provided the basis for the subsequent Norman claim to the English throne. Although Ethelred paid tribute to the plundering Danes, Sweyn I (the Forkbeard), king of Denmark, invaded England in 1013 and proclaimed himself king. In 1014 Ethelred fled to Normandy but returned a few months later upon Sweyn's death. Sweyn's son and successor, Canute II, invaded the country a year later and, following Ethelred's death, became king of England. Ethelred's sobriquet, "The Unready," is a corruption of the Old English unraed, "bad counsel," which is a reference to his misfortunes.5

Narrative

During most of the rule of the Danish kings of England who followed Canute II, Edward lived at the court of the dukes of Normandy. In 1041, Hardecanute invited Edward to England, and the following year Edward succeeded to the English throne, largely because of the support of Godwin, earl of Wessex. Edward married Godwin's daughter Edith. The marriage apparently never consummated, and popular tradition has ascribed this to Edward's piety or effetism. He was for all intents and purpose married to the church. Soon Edward gave his favor to the enemies of Godwin, who was harassed and for a brief time exiled. Perhaps because of Godwin's popularity in England, a reconciliation was effected about 1052. Godwin's son Harold, later Harold II of England, became one of Edward's advisers, and another son, Tostig, became his favorite. In 1055, Edward made Tostig earl of Northumbria, but the earl's rule was so oppressive that a rebellion broke out in 1065, and Edward was forced to exile him. Thereafter, Edward's health failed, and he was unable to attend the consecration of Westminster Abbey, which he had founded. He was succeeded by Harold II, the last Saxon king of England. Less than a century after his death, Edward was canonized.4,5

Children of Edgar and Elfrida:

Narrative

Edgar was the younger son of King Edmund I. In 957, during the rule of his brother, King Edwy, Edgar was chosen by the Mercians and Northumbrians to be their sovereign. One of his first acts was to recall the monastic reformer St. Dunstan, whom Edwy had exiled; Edgar subsequently made Dunstan bishop of Worcester and London and archbishop of Canterbury. In 959 Edgar succeeded to the entire English Kingdom. His reign was notable for the establishment of national consolidation, reformation of the clergy, improvement of the judiciary system, and formation of a fleet to defend the coast against the Scandinavian Vikings.6

In addition to his wives, Edgar had as concubines Wolfhild, a nun, and a servant maid "whom he loved entirely," name unknown.7 One of these was probably the mother of his daughter Edgith.

Narrative

The following year Olaf Godfreyson, a Viking ruler of Dublin, seized the territory of Northumbria in northern England and extended his rule as far south as Leicester. After Olaf's death in 941, Edmund made war on the Vikings, expelling them from the country three years later. In 945 Edmund occupied the kingdom of Strathclyde, west of Northumbria, and turned it over to his ally Malcolm I MacDonald, king of Scotland. The following year Edmund was stabbed to death by a robber and was succeeded by his brother Edred (reigned 945-55). Edmund was known as a legal reformer, especially for his restrictions on the blood feud.6

Major Life Events

Edwy of England was born circa 940 at Wessex, England.2 He married Elgiva of England, daughter of Aethelfrith of Wessex.3 Edwy died on 1 October 959.4

Narrative

Edwy ascended to the throne at age 14 upon the death of Eadred, his uncle. Edwy succeeded to Wessex and his brother Edgar succeeded to Mercia and Northumbria, but as Edgar was almost two years Edwy's junior, his succession was held in abeyance until he was older. In effect the two kings, particularly Edwy, wer advised by a strong council which included Dunstan, the abbot of Glastonbury. Edyw's relationship with Dunstan started poorly -- apparently at his coronation Edwy disappeared from the council and was found consorting with a young lady -- and got worse. Edwy could not work with Dunstan and had him banished from England in 957. He married his childhood sweetheart, Elgiva, but this was annulled within a year on the gounds of consanguinity - they were third cousins. It suggests that the elders, particularly Oda, the archbishop of Canterbury, did not want Edwy to father children, perhaps because of the continuing problem of health or, more likely, because these would threaten his brother's right to the throne, and it seems that by 959 the elders were now firmly behind Edgar. Edwy died in October 959 at age eighteen, and it has usually been accepted that he died of the inherent family malady, but the growing opposition to him may suggest that he was helped on his way.5

Children of Robert and Constance:

Narrative

Robert II was the son of King Hugh Capet, born in Orléans, and educated at Reims under the French scholar Gerbert, who later became Pope Sylvester II. In 996 Robert married, as his second wife, his cousin Bertha of Burgundy. Two years later Pope Gregory V excommunicated him and annulled this marriage, which was considered incestuous by the church; in 1003 Robert submitted to the pope and married the daughter of the marquis of Provence, Constance of Arles, by whom he had four sons. He recognized Hugh, the eldest of these sons, as his successor. After Hugh's death in 1025, the other sons, aided by their mother, revolted; Robert was still fighting them at the time of his own death. Robert was called The Pious because of his humility and charity; he was also esteemed as a soldier and ruler6.
