Children of John and Elizabeth:

Narrative

About May 1384, John de Holand murdered "with circumstances of peculiar atrocity, a Carmelite Friar, who had charged John of Gaunt with high treason." In July 1385, "he slew the Earl of Stafford's eldest son [Ralph de Stafford] in the quarrel that ensued between them" and then took sanctuary. The Complete Peerage, Stafford section, states that he killed Ralph de Stafford "in revenge for the death of his favorite esquire, who was killed in a quarrel with one of Stafford's archers." Though the king, Richard II, promised Stafford's father, Hugh de Stafford, that he would not pardon the murderer, in February 1385/1386, he did pardon Holand (his half-brother) and returned his possessions to him. Stafford's father (who in 1378 had killed Robert Hawksley "in the quire of Westminster Abbey") in March 1386 received license to voyage overseas on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Children of Edward and Joan:

Narrative

He was called the Black Prince because of the black armor he wore or because of his temper. Sedgwick in The Black Prince, indicates that the name came about because of his "dreadful deeds in war" but adds that 'the name does not appear in recorded history until two hundred years after his death." Costain, The Three Edwards, reminds us that Edward wore black armor ("sable mail" -- a gift from his father) at the battle of Crécy and that he used black in his heraldic devices.4

Narrative

Richard II's reign was marked by national disunity and civil strife. Richard was born in Bordeaux, France. In 1376, the year of his father's death, he was placed in the care of his uncle John of Gaunt, duke of Lancaster. In 1377, on the death of his grandfather, King Edward III, Richard became ruler of England. Parliament, which had obtained greater power in the last years of Edward III's reign, now sought to secure control of the government. In 1389 Richard, with the help of John of Gaunt, succeeded in asserting his authority.

In 1397 Richard exiled John of Gaunt's son, Henry Bolingbroke, Duke of Hereford, who later became Richard's successor as Henry IV, and executed or banished other rebellious lords. On his return from a military expedition to Ireland in 1399 Richard found that Bolingbroke had returned from exile at the head of a formidable army. Richard was captured by Bolingbroke, forced to resign his crown, and secretly confined in Pontefract Castle, where he either died of starvation or was murdered in 1400.5

Children of Pepin and Aupais:

Narrative

Julius Caesar subdued the Gauls, native tribes of Gaul (France) 58 to 51 BC. The Romans ruled 500 years. The Franks, a Teutonic tribe, reached the Somme from the East c. AD 250. By the 5th century the Merovingian Franks ousted the Romans. In 451, with the help of Visigoths, Burgundians and others, they defeated Attila and the Huns at Chalons-sur-Marne.

Childeric I became leader of the Merovingians 458. His son Clovis I (Chlodwig, Ludwig, Louis), crowned 481, founded the dynasty. After defeating the Alemanni (Germans) 496, he was baptized a Christian and made Paris his capital. His line ruled until Childeric III was deposed, 751.

The West Merovingians were called Neustrians, the eastern Austrasians. Pepin of Herstal (687-714), major domus, or head of the palace, of Austrasia, took over Neustria as dux (leader) of the Franks. Pepin's son, Charles, called Martel (the Hammer), defeated the Saracens at Tours-Poitiers, 732; was succeeded by his son, Pepin the Short, 741, who deposed Childeric III and ruled as king until 768. His son, Charlemagne, or Charles the Great (742-814), became king of the Franks, 768, with his brother Carloman, who died 771. Charlemagne ruled France, Germany, parts of Italy, Spain, Austria, and enforced Christianity. Crowned Emperor of the Romans by Pope Leo III in St. Peter's, Rome, Dec. 25, 800. Succeeded by son, Louis I the Pious, 814. At death, 840, Louis left empire to sons, Lothair (Roman emperor); Pepin I (king of Aquitaine); Louis II (of Germany); Charles the Bald (France). They quarreled and by the peace of Verdun, 843, divided the empire.4

Louis II was the eldest son of Holy Roman Emperor Lothair I. Louis was coemperor with his father from 850 to 855, when he became sole emperor, but his authority was in fact confined to his Italian kingdom. Although he was successful in some campaigns against the Saracen invaders of Italy, he was constricted by the jealousies of local Italian princes. He acquired much of Provence on the death of his brother Charles, but he was a weak ruler, and his empire declined.4
