Narrative

     Bradley Leonard enlisted in Company G, Virginia 50th Infantry Regiment on 21 July 1861 at Wythe Co., Virginia.4 He was listed on the second muster for the 50th Infantry Regiment for the period September 1, 1861, to January 1, 1892. Company B, 63rd Virginia Infantry was organized April 5, 1862. Seventeen members of Co. G, 50th Virginia Infantry were transfer to Company B, evidently including Bradley Leonard who is listed as a sergeant.5 Bradley may have been killed during the Civil War as his widow married David Harr as her second husband (his second wife) in 1866.

     From the Emporia Weekly Republican, Feb. 14, 1884 - Neosha Rapids, Feb. 11. The infant dau. of David Harr died on the 8th inst., and was buried on the 9th. This is the third death here in the last two weeks, and a number of others are lying sick at the present.

Calvin Childers, a well known and highly respected citizen of this county, died at his home in Neosho Rapids Sunday evening, of paralysis, aged 51 years. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon and was in charge of the Hartford Mason lodge, of which the deceased was a member. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. and M.W. of A.

From the Emporia News, Nov. 17, 1887 - Neosho Rapids items - Married November 9, 1887 at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs. David Harr, by Squire Wilson, Mr. G. G. Bray of Eureka, Ks., and Ms. Mattie Harr, of this city. They started at once for Eureka, where they will make their future home. Mrs. Bray was raised in Neosho Rapids and was a favorite among the young people, and will be missed by them.5 Gale died before 1920.

Census which would indicate that she probably was born early 1880 after the census was taken. The 1900 U. S. Census indicates she was born in June 1880.

Narrative

     From an article in the Emporia Gazette, March 8, 1980:

"Neosho Rapids - Mrs. Burton L. Hancock of Wichita, a former resident of Neosho Rapids, died Friday in Wichita. During the 1940's, she worked in the cafeteria at Newman Hospital in Emporia. She moved from Neosho Rapids to Wichita in 1951, and was employed there at Woolf's Cafeteria before her retirement. She was a member of the Neosho Rapids United Methodist Church.
     Services at the Jones Funeral Home in Lebo will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. and burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Neosho Rapids. The Rev. Wayne Newlin will conduct the services.
     Hattie J. Childers, daughter of Calvin and Jennie Childers, was born May 6, 1885, in Neosho Rapids. She married Burton L. Hancock in Emporia on Jan. 30, 1906. Mr. Hancock died Nov. 23, 1943. Mrs. Hancock is survived by two daughters, Eula Hoover of Wichita and Mabel Miller of Kansas City; one son, Virgil W. Hancock of Denver, Colo; eight grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Ethel McMillen, and two brothers, Read and Leroy Childers."

Narrative

     From the death notice in the Emporia Gazette, Nov. 23, 1943:

"Berton Leroy Hancock, 64, of Neosho Rapids, died at 10:15 o'clock Monday night in the Newman Memorial County hospital. He had been in failing health for about two years, and had been seriously sick for the past three weeks.
     Funeral services will be held at the McVey-Jones Funeral home in Emporia, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be in the Neosho Rapids cemetery.
     Mr. Hancock was born March 25, 1879, in Neosho Rapids, and had lived in or near Neosho Rapids all his life. He married Hattie Childers January 30, 1906. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Harold Hancock, Neosho Rapids, and Virgil Hancock, Emporia; two daughters, Mrs. Eula Mae Hamilton and Mrs. Mabel Ormsby, Emporia, and three grandchildren, Kay and Karen Hancock, Neosho Rapids, and Judy Handcock, Emporia. Three sisters and a brother also survive. They are Mrs. P. B. Tucker, Deming, Wash; Mrs. George Hewes, Indianapolis, Ind; Mrs. Sherman Slead, Purcell, Okla., and P. F. Hancock, Emporia. Mr. Hancock was a member of the Masonic lodge at Hartford."

     From an article in the Emporia Gazette, Thursday, November 25, 1943:

"Rites for B. L. Hancock. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the McVey-Jones Funeral home for Berton Leroy Hancock, of Neosho Rapids, who died Monday night in an Emporia hospital. The Rev. J. C. Brogan, paston of the Grace Methodist church, conducted the services, assisted by the Rev. Graydon Pittman, pastor of the Neosho Rapids & Hartford Methodist church."

Narrative

     Lenora was also known as Nora.

     Herrick's Card File of Neosho Rapids, Hartford area families, indicates that Amanda Byerly died in 1934 at the home of her youngest daughter, Nora Miller. The obituary of William H., Amanda's husband, mentions seven children, five sons and two daughters, two of which have died earlier. From tombstone inscriptions we know that on daughter, Mary A., and a son, Harry E., died on 5 and 4 February, 1889, respectively. The other daughter, Bertha, evidently married a Dean Gilbert, also mentioned in Herrick's Card File in Amanda's move to Iola in 1901.
