However, he appears with his wife Lula and four children in Ray County, Missouri on the 1900 U. S. Census.      John E. Harr, fifty-two years old and a groceryman died at his home No 812 State Street, at 7:30 o'clock Thursday evening of pneumonia. He had been sick only a few days.
The death of Mr. Harr will occasion keen regret as he was popular and esteemed being a member of a well known Sullivan county family. He was a member of State Street Methodist church and an honorable and highly respected citizen. He was a first cousin of E. C. Harr, a well known citizen of Bristol.

Mrs. J. E. Harr, whose husband died last week, requests the Herald Courier to supply an omission made in the report of his death. She says the he had been married twice--the second time, October 17, 1906, to Mrs. William B. Newton, formerly Miss Sallie M. Vance. She says that his church letter was in his pocket and that he had not attended any church since his last marriage except the Landmark Baptist church. A distressing accident took place at the Rapids on Saturday last, at 6 p. m. by which a Rolla Harr, aged 12 years, a son of David Harr, and Abel Leonard, aged 10 years, a step-son of the same, lost their lives by drowning. The two men and one of the boys jumped out and made their way to the shore. The other two above named were washed over and drowned. About five hundred people turned out on Sunday to make search for the bodies. The river was dragged, but the bodies were not found up to Monday night. Children of William and Amanda:

Narrative

William was employed Farmer in 1870 at Sullivan Co., Tennessee.3

     William's obituary:

     W. H. Byerly passed quietly into the arms of death on the evening of June 4th, 1893, after a protracted illness of four months of abscess of the brain accompanied by partial paralysis caused by a fall, and other afflictions, aged 46 years, 6 months and 28 days.
Wm. H. Byerly, son of John and Amanda Byerly, was born in Rockingham county, Virginia, November 6th, 1846. Moved with his parents to Sullivan county, Tennessee, in 1858. In 1870 he came to Kansas, and after remaining here a few years he returned to his parents in Blount county, Tennessee. He was married to Amanda Hinton in 1878 and they removed to Kansas in 1880 and settled near Neosho Rapids. Seven children were born to them--five boys and two girls, two of whom have gone before to that brighter and better Kingdom.
The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church for some years in his early manhood, and he expressed himself as having the blessed assurance that he would soon be at rest with his Ceator, just before his death.
He was a member of the A. O. U. W. Lodge of Hartford, and the Lodge gave him unceasing care during his entire illness.
He bore his sickness very patiently; was deprived of his mental faculties the greater part of the time during his illness, but was restored to his mind for about two weeks prior to his death; meanwhile he talked of his departure for another world which he knew was near at hand and planned to the best of his ability for the future welfare of his loved ones whom he knew must still survive through the conflicts of life. On account of paralysis of his throat it was impossible for him to swallow the greater part of the time. Since the 2nd of May he had not been able to swallow any solid food. His suffering was severe and singularly beyond parallel.
The funeral services, which were appropriately conducted by Rev. R. T. Harkness, of Hartford, who delivered a most touching and beautiful sermon, were held at the M. P. church at Neosho Rapids on Monday afternoon. The spacious building was hardly adequate to the occasion. A large representation of the A. O. U. W. Lodge who had charge of the remains, were present. The song service was well rendered by the choir. At the grave the ritualistic ceremony of the Lodge was performed in an impressive manner and the mortal remains were tenderly laid to rest by his brothers. To the bereaved family and relatives is extended the deep sympathy of many friends in this their dark hour of affliction. The regard for the departed was manifested by one of the longest processions that has ever passed from the city to Mount Hope cemetery. Regina, Neosho Rapids

The A. O. U. W. Lodge printed the following resolution concerning William Byerly.

Resolution of Condolence

Whereas, It has pleased Almighty God, our loving Father, to remove from our midst, to a glorious Lodge above, our true and noble brother, W. H. Byerly, there be it

Children of Margaret and John:

Narrative

On 13 April 1871 Margaret applied for a pension based on John Hill's service in the War of 1812. The pension was based on the Act of 14 February 1871 and was available to those soldiers and widows of soldiers who remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War. Her application was witnessed by her grandchildren, Georgie S. Goodwin and W. L. Hunt. Neighbors Henry Compton and Thomas McCrory made statements about knowing the Hills since 1809.

Margaret in a statement quoted from the Family Bible, "John Hill was born in Rockingham County North Carolina May 29, 1782 and married to margaret (sic) Covington June 6, 1800 who was born December 25, 1784. They removed to the State of Tennessee December 1809."

On 18 January 1873, Margaret's pension of $8.00 per month was approved commencing February 14, 1871, the date of the Act. Margaret died 28 January 1873. Her last payment and probably only payment was mailed February 1, 1873 in Nashville. Margaret probably never saw a cent of her pension and it most likely went to her daughter Margaret Catherine Hunt.

Elizabeth Daughtrey was born say 1765 at Northampton Co., North Carolina.1 She married Charles Lawrence, son of Charles Lawrence and Amey Joyner, say 1786 probably in North Carolina. The marriage date is based on the analysis of the 1787 North Carolina Census. Elizabeth died circa 1836 at Tennessee.

Children of Elizabeth and Charles:

Narrative

Elizabeth was also known as Betsy.

In the Taxable Property and Polls in Sumner Co. for the years 1816 through 1821 Elizabeth is listed with 50 acres on Sink Creek in all years. In 1816 she was listed next to John Lawrence, James Vincent agent. John is probably her son John. The 50 acres was formally purchased from Richard Vincent in 1833 for the heirs of Charles Lawrence, Elizabeth's husband. I believe the land was given to Elizabeth for her use after the death her husband around 1806/07 perhaps by James Vincent and then formally sold to the heirs of Charles Lawrence in 1833 by Richard Vincent who may have been a heir of James Vincent. In 1817, Elizabeth was again listed next to John Lawrence, James Vinson agent. In 1818, Betsy Lawrence was listed next to Robert Lawrence and John Lawrence by James Vincent agent. In 1819 and 1820, Elizabeth Lawrence was again listed with Robert and John. In 1821, Elizabeth is listed with John.2 Her son Robert married in 1820.

On 4 November 1833, land that had been conveyed to Elizabeth Lawrence after the death of her husband, Charles, for her use durng her widowhood was deed to Elizabeth and the heirs of Charles Lawrence. That deed is as follows:3

Major Life Events

Charles Lawrence was probably born at Southampton Co., Virginia, say 1761. He married Elizabeth Daughtrey, daughter of Jesse Daughtrey and Unknown ?, say 1786 probably in North Carolina. The marriage date is based on the analysis of the 1787 North Carolina Census. Charles died after 8 December 1806 at Sumner Co., Tennessee.1

Children of Charles and Elizabeth:

Narrative

Charles was probably born in Virginia before his father Charles and mother Amey sold their land in 1770.

Apparently when Charles came to Sumner Co., Tennessee, he did not purchase land but lived with his brother John. Charles first appears on the 1798 Sumner Co. tax list immediately after John Lawrence. He also appears on the 1799 Sumner Co. tax list after John Lawrence. On the 1799 tax list John is listed with 200 acres "on Cumberland River" while Charles is listed with no acres. Charles also appears on the 1801 tax list next to John who is listed with 183 acres on Sinking Creek.2

Recorded in the January 1801 Term Sumner County Court Minutes: The last will and testament of James Chapman decd. is exhibited in court and proved by the oath of Charlees Lawrence a subscribing witness thereto who also made oath that Thos. Campbell another subscribing witness to the testament subscribed his name in the presence of the said Lawrence ___ at the sametime Martha Chapman & Alexander Chapman Executrix & Executer therein named appeared in court & qualified as executrix & executor to the said will and testament.3

Land to support his family is not purchased until 4 November 1833, when land is purchased per instructions of the will of Charles Lawrence for his heirs by Robert Lawrence, executor of the will of Charles Lawrence. At this time, for the sum of $200, a tract of land containing 50 acres on the waters of Sinking Creek is purchased from Richard Vincent of Warren County. This land is described as the same tract of land Richard Vincent conveyed to Elizabeth Lawrence during her widowhood.4 Evidently the land was conveyed to Elizabeth after Charles' death for her and her childrens use, but was not purchased until 1833.

Later transactions involving this tract of land establishes the children of Charles and Elizabeth that were living at the time of the purchase in 1833. Amah Lawrence (a daughter of Charles) married John Moss in Sumner Co. and had two daughters, Mary Jane born circa 1814 who married Joseph C. Johnson, and Emmaliza (Eliza) born circa 1816 who married Anderson Kirkpatrick. On 12 January 1849, Robert Lawrence (a son of Charles), Anderson Kirkpatrick and his wife Emmaliza, Joseph C. Johnson and his wife Mary Jane sell to Lemuel Lawrence (another son of Charles) the same tract of land mentioned earlier for the sum of $80.5 It would appear at this time that Amah is deceased and her daughters, Mary Jane and Emmaliza, along with Amah's brother Robert, are selling their share of the property to their Lemuel.

On the 17 December 1850, John and William (two more sons of Charles) sell this same aforementioned tract of land to Lemuel for a sum of $80.6 Again, it appears that John and William are selling their share of the property to their brother Lemuel.

From these transactions, we can establish that there were five heirs of Charles alive when the tract of land was purchased in 1833, Amah, Robert, John, William, and Lemuel. Each of these five would have had a $40 inheritance in the land purchased for $200. Each, the heirs of Amah (who evidently had died prior to 1849), Robert, John, and William sell their shares to their brother Lemuel in 1849 and 1850 for their $40 inheritance.

Lemuel sells this tract of land to Mitchell R. Moore on 5 January 1856, for a sum of $500.

Another possible son of Charles and Elizabeth may be a Charles Lawrence who enlisted as a private in Capt. Sarver's regiment from Sumner Co. in the War of 1812. Among his War of 1812 military records is a power of attorney to Abram Trigg for his wages. Abram Trigg also served as bondsman for the marriage of Amah Lawrence and John Moss. This Charles died in 1815.

Charles made a will on 8 December 1806. Last will and testament of Charles Lawrence: Will:

I constitute. I Charles Larence of Sumner County District of Mero and state of Tennessee being by the providence of God in a weak and low condition of body but in sound mind and memory, do in the presence of Almighty God, constitute this my last will and testament in the following manner, viz, first for as much of my personable property such as can be best spared from the use of my family to be sold and purchase made of as much land for the support of my family as my worthy executors may think fit or sufficient for that purpose which land is to continue for the use of the widow until the children is of age, provided she continues to act the part of a mother till then; at which period if the widow should have married, the land is to be sold this Money equally divided between my legatees. Next as much of my property to be sold as will defray my lawful debts and funeral charges the balance to remain for the use of the widow and children for the conducting of which purpose, I do by these present constitute my worthy Brothers Robert Larence and John Larence my Executors with Betsy my wife, this indenture made this 8th day of December in the year of our Lord 1806. Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of Thomas Campbell Sen., Thomas Campbell Junior.
Charles (his mark) Larence1.

I believe that there is a possibility that the John Lawrence who married Betsey McKinsey is the son of Charles and brother of Lemuel, and is the John Lawrence that appears in Henry Co., Tennessee on the 1850 and 1860 census.

Annah (Amah) Lawrence was born say 1790. She married John Moss on 24 May 1809 at Sumner Co., Tennessee.1,2 Annah died after 1840.

Narrative

Amah's birth date is estimated on her marriage date of 1809 and assuming she was probably between the ages of 18 and 21.

Amah obviously was alive when property was purchased for the support of the heirs of Charles in 1833, but apparently was deceased by 1849 when her share of the property was sold to Lemuel. She may be the female that appears in the 1840 census in the 50-60 age group in the household of Lemuel Lawrence.

Narrative

The following account of Claude was provided by Anne Lawrence, wife of Robert Lynn Lawrence, grandson of Claude Lawrence.

Claude Lawrence was a colorful fellow. I remember him vividly from my childhood in Cottontown, Sumner Co., TN. I do not remember his first wife (Perry and Jesse's mother) but knew his second wife (whom you mention), Ethel Busby (also spelled Bursby). After Claude died, Jesse took care of Ethel until she passed away. They lived on Franklin Rd., Cottontown, TN (Sumner Co.)

According to the family: Claude opened and ran the first movie theater (The Palace) in Franklin, KY. He ran one afternoon and two night shows; was very successful with it and brought home his money every night in a dish pan filled with pennies, nickels, dimes. After he had enjoyed this success for some time, he decided he had made all the money he would ever need! and gave the theater to his friend "Rooster", the town drunk (if this is a mistake concerning the person's character, I apologize, but that's what Claude's family says occurred). He decided he wanted adventure so he took his savings and joined the Barnum and Baily Circus as a clown. After that, he and a friend who could sing well teamed up. Claude preached and the other sang. Finally, he ran out of money. He hopped a train, starving, and discovered that under the straw were bananas left from a previous shipment! When Claude finally got back home to his mother in Franklin, KY, he was flat broke, full of bananas, and covered with soot from the train.

He came to Cottontown, Sumner Co., TN, to visit friends named Creekmore. When he married Lizzie Nuckles Strother, she had her Cotton family-inherited land and had purchased her own acreage and home on Pee Dee Creek in Cottontown. Overall, Claude didn't take the responsibility of marriage and children very seriously. He would leave for long periods of time and had it not been for the fact that Lizzie owned the land and had pasture/garden, she and their two young sons, Perry and Jesse, would have gone hungry several times. They lived through one winter trading cow milk for hay with a neighbor who transported the items quite a distance over rolling hills every day - no matter the weather. Neither family would have survived without the other. When Jesse was old enough to do farm work, he went up the road to live with his mother's sister and family where he was given room/board. He visited his mother regularly and helped out as much as he could. Claude and Lizzie Nuckles Strother married on ??; Lizzie was born 12 Jan. 1872, Sumner Co, TN; died 27 May 1938, Sumner Co, TN at her home on Pee Dee Creek Rd., Cottontown, TN, and is buried there, beside her parents, George Alex Strother and Mary Alice Cotton Strother.

Luckily, when Claude married Ethel Bursy (Bursby), she owned her own property so he never had to work to have a roof over his head. Until about 1958 children in Cottontown attended the Cottontown School. It was 3 rooms, coal stove in the middle of one room, outdoor toilets (of course) and the teacher (some times 2 teachers) taught 8 grades. There was a large school yard where everyone gathered to play softball, etc. I remember many times when Claude would walk over from the country store and do magic tricks for us during recess. He seemed old to me then and I thought it was amazing that this jovial fellow could dance a jig/sing a little song and turn flips as easily as we might walk across the yard! We were always excited to see him coming across the bridge; I never remember him being anything but bursting with laughter. He so enjoyed "putting on a show for the little ones." He was one of the "regulars" at the Cottontown grocery store and there was no one who could take his place when he died.1
