Narrative

Not much is known about this John Rose except that he owned land on Gap Greek and part of the land belonged to his father, Hosea. Two tracts were original land grants. He had an original land grant there himself. His wife has never been determined but may have been a daughter of John Cunningham who lived next door. There were later children in the Cunningham family named Hosey and McKenzie. In the minutes of Prospect Church, near Loudon, Tennessee, in 1832 McKenzie Rose reported that John Cunningham had died. John was a private in the War of 1812 under Col. Samuel Bunch and Capt. John Hawk in the East Tennessee Mounted Infantry.1

He was first mentioned in primary records when he, Hosea Rose, and McKinsey Rose all signed an 1813 petition. In the 1830 Sevier County, Tennessee, U. S.
