Narrative

John was also known as [Sir] John Lawrence.

Sir John was the second Baronet. He entered Oxford at age 17. In 1631 he was admitted to the Inner Temple. Sir John succeded to the Baronetcy 13 November 1638.3

In 1650 he bought Bardwell Manor, Bucks. It was sold in 1666.4 (Note: According to Schuyler Lawrence, Sir John sold Bardwell Manor in 1666, yet says he died in 1664. From the information in G.E.C. Complete Baronetage it would appear that it was his wife who was buried 11 October 1664 in Chelsea, not Sir John and Schyler Lawrence had confused the two. G.E.C. states that Sir John was living 28 December 1680 but died before 19 February 1710/11.

This Sir John Lawrence repaired the monument of Sir Thomas More in Chelsea Church and had this inscription recut upon a slab of black marble "After he was beheade, this trunke was interred in Chelsea church, near the middle of the south wall, where was some slight monument erected, which being worne by time, Sir [John] Laurence of Chelsea (no kinne to him) at his own proper costs and chardges erected to his memorie a handsome inscription of marble."5

Children of Thomas and Anne English

Narrative

Thomas was also known as [Sir] Thomas Lawrence.

G.E.C. Complete Baronetage states that John was born about 1645 but also states that his father Sir John Lawrence, married Mary Hampson about or before 1646.

Sir Thomas Lawrence was the third Baronet. He entered Oxford (St. John's College) 20 November 1661 at age 16. He received a B. A. 23 February 1664/1665 and a M.A. from Univeristy College in 1668. Sir Thomas was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1664.3

The following two statements from Boddie and from G.E.C. ed. Complete Baronages (also found in Burke's Extinct and Dormat Baronages) may not be true.

     1. Sir Thomas Lawrence accompanied Lionel Copley to Maryland and was Secretary of the Colony. Lionel Copley died September 1693 and on the 7th May 1694, Sir Thomas Lawrence, as President of the Council, became Acting Governor of Maryland and served until Governor Nicholson arrived.

     2. Sir Thomas spent all of his estates and emigrated to Maryland where he was secretary to Governor Seymour in 1696.3

Nichol's Herald and Genealogist,, states that in 1696 Sir Thomas Lawrence, Bart. of Iver., Co Bucks, was Secretary of Maryland under Governor Seymour, and he did not, as stated in Burke's Extinct and Dormat Baronages, "emigrate in 1700" in consequence of having "spent all his estate." This same authority states that "Sir Thomas Lawrence, Bart. who was buried at Chelsea in April 1714 is presumed to be this same gentleman." Nichols goes on to say that "Sir Thomas Lawrence, Bart. of Iver. and Secretary of Maryland, died in that colony in 1712, and it can scarcely be supposed that his remains were sent home for interment at Chelsea two years afterwards."4

G.E.C. Complete Baronetage repeats that Sir Thomas Lawrence died in 1712 in Maryland, but raises the question as to whether this relates to his son and heir apparent, John.5

It would appear that there were two different Thomas Lawrences, Bart., and they have been merged into one by some researchers.

Burke's Extinct and Dormat Baronages also states that this Thomas Lawrence had no issue. However, Schuyler Lawrence identifies three children, John, Margaret and Cecilia. There also is an entry in the burial entries of St. Luke's, Chelsea, co. Middlesex for 28 December 1680, for a Giles, son of Mr. Thomas Laurance, esq. I believe this may have been another son of Thomas who died young.

The noble baronet line ended with the death of Sir Thomas in 1714. His only son, John, is believed to have died in Maryland about 1712 leaving no heirs.3

Children of Nathaniel and Mary A. Andrews

Narrative

Nathaniel was also known as [Rev.] Nathaniel Lawrence.

Some researchers have stated that Lt. Nathaniel Lawrence of the Revolutionary war was the son of Humphrey and Ann and that Rev. Nathaniel Lawrence was his son. However, in the May Court 1776 of Bertie Co. North Carolina, it was "ordered that Thomas Ashley be appointed gardien to Nathaniel Larrence, orphan of Humphry Larrence deed on his giving security in the sum of Six hundred pounds which security is accordingly given by Frederick Lawrence Asah? Larrence."7 This would indicate that the Nathaniel Lawrence that was the son of Humphrey and Ann was a minor in 1776 and could not be the Lt. Nathaniel Lawrence of the Revolutionary War. Therefore, Rev. Nathaniel Lawrence, born in 1766, is most likely the son of Humphrey and Ann. Thomas Ashley is probably either Ann Ashly's father or perhaps a brother. Ann Ashly was the wife of the deceased Humphrey Lawrence.
