     Thomas Daughtrey [Sr.] was born circa 1693 at Nansemond Co., Virginia.1,2 He married first Martha Lawrence, daughter of Henry Lawrence and Elizabeth Edey, at Virginia.3,2 He married second Mary Garland, daughter of John Garland and Mary Ennis, before 9 March 1726/27 at North Carolina.4,1 Thomas died after 15 November 1757 at Northampton Co., North Carolina.2

Narrative

     Thomas and Bryan(t) purchased land in Bertie Co., North Carolina on Uraha Swamp at Patterson Branch. In 1729 they applied for livestock marks. They were in Northampton Co. in 1741, when it was created from part of Bertie Co. In 1750/56 Thomas received a quit rent on 680 acres on Uraha Swamp. It is generally considered today that the Bryan(t) listed as Thomas cousin may have been his nephew. Although not formally shown, this Bryan(t) could be shown as Bryan(t) Jr. It is thought that Thomas had a brother by the same name making him Bryan(t) Sr.1

     Thomas made a will at Northampton Co., North Carolina. Thomas's Will mentions his wife and his childen, grandson John Daughtrey and cousin Bryan(t) Daughtry. Witnesses were Joshua Daughtrey and Alexandria Daughtrey.
In the name of God Amen I Thomas Daughtrey of Northampton County in North Carolina being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect memory thanks be given to God for it therefore calling to mind the mortality of the body as knowing that in is apointed for all men to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gve it and my body to the earth to be bury in a decent and Christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall recover the same again by the mighty power of God and -------- such worldly goods as it hath pleased God to bless me with I give and dispose of in manner and form following.
Item. I give and bequeath to my wife Mary Daughtrey one Negro woman called Cats to her and her disposal and the use of one Negro man called Mingo during her natural life and this after her decease to my son Samuel Daughtrey Igive the said Mingo to him and his heirs.

Major Life Events

     Elizabeth Edey married Henry Lawrence, son of Robert Lawrence and Elizabeth Adkinson.1 Elizabeth probably died after 27 September 1739 at Nansemond Co., Virginia.2

Narrative

     On "the 14 day of the 10 mo 1699" (14 December 1699) Mary Lawrence, Joane Lawrence, and Elizabeth Lawrence" witnessed the marriage of Jacob Rickesis and Mary M. Exum.3 Mary is probably the wife of John Lawrence, brother of Henry Lawrence who is the husband of Elizabeth Lawrence. Joane is probably the wife of Robert Lawrence, bother to John and Henry.

     On "the 15 day of this instant mo being the first mo of the year 1702" the marriage of Thomas Page and Isabell Lawrence was witnessed by brothers Michall Lawrence and Thomas Lawrence (brothers of Isabell), Elizabeth Lawrence (probably Isabell's mother), Joane Lawrence (wife of Robert Lawrence, and Mary Lawrence (wife of John Lawrence). Isabell was the daughter of Henry Lawrence, brother to the aforementioned Robert and John, and Elizabeth Edey.4

     On "15 day of the 11 mo 1707" Robert Lawrence and Elizabeth Lawrence were witness to the marriage of James Denson and Sarah Dryton.5

     Elizabeth made a will on 27 September 1739 at Nansemond Co., Virginia. Elizabeth's will:
Elisabeth Lawernce Widow and Relict of Henry Lawrence of this County Deceased, lying weake in Body but in sound and perfect mind and memory do make nominate and appoint this my last will and Testament in maner and form following ----

Imprimis it is my true intent and meaning that all the just debts which in consience or Equity I owe to all or any persons, which sums be honestly satisfied and paid in some convenient place after my decease by my Executor, hereafter named -

Item: I Give and bequeath unto my Eldest Sone Michael Lawrence one Negroe Woman Called Nod and also one Negroe Girl called Nanney to him and Susanna his now Wife during the time of their natural lives and after their decease Then said Negroe Woman and their Increase to be and remain to thier two sons Thomas and John Lawrence and to their Heirs and Assigns for ever -

Item: Whereas I have already made portion for my second son Thomas Lawrence to The utmost of my Ability towards his support and maintainance I do Hereby give and Bequeath unto my said son Thomas Lawrence one Feather Bed and furniture and also I give him a full Remitance and Discharge from all Debts due and demands What so ever which he now Oweth unto me or my Estate. It being the full part and proportion that he shall Ever have or Claim To them of in or to my Estate forever and Where as my said son Thomas Lawrence hath now in his custody the Copy of Articles of Covenants formerly made Between him and me I do freely forgive him the Injustice and Wrong he hath done me in that particuler but do Declare that said Writing to All intents and purpose to be Void and of no Effect -

Item: I Give and Bequeath unto my Daughter Sarah the Widow and Relict of John Parsons one gold Ring haveing his posey/ as God Decreed so we agreed/ And also the sum of five shillings Current Money presently after my decease.

Item: Whereas I have sometime last winter sold and Delivered by Virtue of a Bill of Sale one Negroe Girl called Sarah to my Daughter Pleasant the now wife of John Benton I do by this my last will Confirm the Title of my maid Negroe Girl and her Increase to my said Daughter Pleasant Benton and to her Heirs and Assigns for Ever _

Item: I Give and Bequeath unto my Daughter Issabella the now Wife of Thos. Page Two Negroe Children being Girls the one called Moll and the Other Beck. My Negro Girl called Beck to be and Remain at the proper Disposal of My said Daughter Issabella and her heirs forever But the Negroe girl Called Moll the first Child she shall bring to perfection the same to be and Remain to my Grandson Thomas Page and to his heirs and Assigns forever.

Item: Whereas I have sometime last winter sold and Delivered by Virtue of a Bill of Sale unto my Daughter Mary the Widow and Relict of Andrew Boath One Negroe Girl called Kills I do by this my last will confirm the Title of my said Negro Girl and her increase unto my said Daughter Booth and to her Heirs and Assigns forever -

Item: I Give and Bequeath unto the Children of my Daugher Martha the late wife of Thomas Daughtrey one Cow to be Delivered to them after my Deceased by My Executors hereafter Made -

Item: Whereas my Grandson Henry Lawrence the son of Michael Lawrence Is now justly indebted to me and to my Estate I do freely forgive him the Debts But do Clealy Discharge him from all or any further or other Title to any Part of Portion of my Estate Whatsoever forever by this my last will -

Item: I Give and Bequeath unto my Grandaughter Martha the now Wife of John Kackey one Negroe Girl called rose I say I give and Bequeath to my said Negro Girl and her increase to my said Grand Daughter and to her and to Heirs forever -

Item: I Give and bequeath unto my four Daughters first Pleasant Isabella Abagail and Mary all my wearing apperell Both of Wooling and Linen of What sort or price soever to be Equally and justly shared devided among them By just and equal directions in some Convenient time after my Decease -

Item: It is my Desire and my true Instant meaning that whereas my estate Cleare of Debts that my Will only to be proved in form my Executors giving such security As the Court shall think fitt to see my Legacys discharged and my Estate Equally and Justly shared and Divided According to the true Intent propose and meaning of this my last will and Testament but no Valuation or Appraisment to be taken of it -

It is my desire and my true Intent and Meaning that all my Estate of Goods, Chattles, Utensils and Moveables of what Nature and kind soever both Within doars and without together with all my negroes Not before given and Bequeathed with all my stock Cattle sheep horses mares Hoggs to be some convenient time after my decease Equally and justly divided shared & by just and /Equal divisions as to Quantity and Quallity or Value Between this my five Children here Named Vizt. Michael Lawrence Pleasant Benton Issabella Page Abigail Daughter and Mary Boath and It is by True Intent and Meaning and my Will Desire that in making the Division Aforesaid or the representation of them shall form that Instant Be Debard from having or claiming to have any further or other part or portion of my said Estate then and Testament it the intend that the Division aforesaid by maid after a Christian like manner peaceably and Quietly -

Lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my two sons in law Vizt Bryant Daughtry and John Benton Junr. to be my whole and sole Executors of this my Last will and Testament to see my funeral and other Expences Discharged and a True inten and meaning of this my will Performed my Disier being that Richard Taylor the writer of this my Will to be Assistant in selling and dividing my Estate afoursaid this Revoaking and making Voyd all former and other wills whatsoever I do in the presence of God and these my Evedence Decliare this to be My last will and Testament in Manner and form Afoursaid.

     Humphrey received 250 acres in the N. W. branch of the Nanzamond River on 27 December 1652, butting on land of Mr. Robert Lawrence, for transportation of five persons, Henry Kinsman, Ann Cowlan, Thomas Naylor, Hugh Jones, and Richard Smith.2
