Narrative

The following information is extracted from Historical Southern Families, by John Bennett Boddie.3

Richard and Thomas Exum are ancestors of this well-known and widely spread Southern Family and probably were brothers. The name is found spelled Exum, Exam, Exom, and Exium in records. Family tradition indicates that they came from a town in England named "Exham." Other variations of the name are Axom and Axum.

Richard Axom and Thomas Goodwin received two grants of land situated on the south side of the Rappannock River on May 22, 1650, from Sir William Berkeley, Govenor of Virginia. The first was for 550 acres "beginning at a point called 'Troublesome Point' and running SSE for 320 poles by the main river side and for a breadth of 273 poles unto a marked post standing by the side of a brook called "Axum's Brook", etc." for transportation of 11 persons including Richard Axom and Sarah Tomblin.

The second patent was for 1000 acres on the south side of the Rappannock River in Brecknerk Bay adjoining on and below land of John Landman for the transportation of 20 persons among whom were Thomas Godwin and Sara Tomblin.

With the mention of "Axum's Brook" in the first patent it appears that the Axum family was located there prior to the issuance of the grant. There is a Norfolk County record dated January 30, 1646, that "John Nansel came into this country with Richard Exum by indenture for three years."

After Richard's death, Thomas Goodwin, on the 28th of the 7th month, 1668 (Oct. 28, 1668) deeded one half of their joint patent for 1000 acres held jointly by himself and Richard, deceased, to Richard's window and orphans. Rappannock County was divided into Richmond and Essex County with Essex County being the county south of the river where the Exum and Godwin lands were located. The following is found in Essex County records: "Thomas Godwin send greetings, whereas Sir William Berkeley did grant a patent of 1000 acres on the south side of Rapp'k River unto Richard Exum, dec'd. and me, the said Thomas Godwin, bering date of May 22, 1650, Now Know Ye that after the s'd Richard Exum, deceased, his widow in behalf of HIS CHILDREN THE OPRHANS to whom the said Exum did give his s'd part of the land, did with my consent make choice of the upper or Westward side of the 1000 acres, and I chose the lower or Eastward side (it being equally divided). I do hereby assign and make over my right to said land unto Robert Tomlyn.

Thomas Godwin moved to Nansemond County where he patented land in 1652. He was soon followed by the Exums.

Two known sons of Richard were Jeremiah and Thomas as proved by a deed in "Essex Land Trials, 1711-1716, pp. 44, 48" wherein a law suit, a deed made May 8, 1685, by Jeremiah and Thomas Exum, sons of Richard Exum, to a Mrs. Gouldman of the land inherited from their father was recorded.

In Nansemond County on Mary 24, 1676/7, Thomas Exum witnessed the will of Thomas Godwin, the joint patentee with his father in 1650. In turn Thoams Godwin Jr. and Mary Godwin witnessed the will of Jeremiah Exum in Isle of Wight County, September 3, 1712.
