Narrative

     On 4 July 1754, Michael Lawrence granted land to John his son. To all people to whome this Writing shall come that I Michel Lawrence of the upper parrish of Nansemond County Send Greeting know yee that I the sd Michel Lawrence for the good Will and Natural Love which I Bair to my son John John Lawrence of the same County and Parrish afor sd Hath given & granted & by these presens doth Give Grant & Confirm unto my Sd Son John all that plantation pease or parcell of Land Whereon I live & all the apertuences thereunto belonging with all my stockes of cattell horses Hogs Housell Stuff & all the Rest of my Estate which I am now perceatd of To Have & To Hold the sd Land ( ) goods & chattels to the sd John Lawrence his hairs Exrs or asigns for ever to him & there proper use & behoof forever freely & quietly without any Matter of Challing Claim Whatsoever In considerration that the said John Lawrance for himself his Hairs Exrs Ads or Asigns Will maintain his above father & mother & keep them with Good Serfishant meet drink washing & Loging well clothd & keep them from all manner of wont whatsoever in sickness & health dureing Both there Natural lives and for the true performance of this Righting I do put My sd Son Infull percestion of all the above premisses to him ( ) forever. In Wittness I hearunto Set My hand & Seal this fourth day of July 1754.

Narrative

     Boddie identifies the Henry Lawrence that is listed on the Quit Rent Roll of 1704 as the Henry Lawrence son of the immigrant Robert Lawrence. I believe this is incorrect and that it is this Henry Lawrence son of George Lawrence who is listed with 200 acres in Nansemond County on the 1704 Quit Rent Roll.2

Narrative

     George Lawrence, son of James Lawrence, evidently had no children or no surviving heirs and appears to deed his land to his kinsman John Lawrence with the stipulation to maintain George for the remainder of his life. That deed follows:2

To all Christian people to whom These presents shal come that I, George Lawrence of the Upper Parish of Nansemond County Hath for divers good causes and consideration of me moving but moore especially for the leve and good affection which I bair to my loving kinsman John Lawrence of the same county and Parrish aforesaid that for a desent maintenance of my person During my naterral Live Have given - Granted and by these presents doth freely and clearly & absolultely Give and Grant unto My said kinsman John Lawrence his heirs Ex & Assns forever my plantation whereon I now live it being one hundred acres more or less and being the land Granted by Deeds from George Lawrence one of the pattentees to James Lawrence bearing the Date teh 27th day of April 1686 which Deed will more fully appear and which said lands were given to my by Will by my Father James Lawrence Bearing date the 9th of May 1687 to Have and to hold the said plantation peace or parcel of land together with all houses buildings and all other pertunances thereunto belonging to him the Said John Lawrence and his heirs forever for the proper use and behoef of him the said John Lawrence his heirs Ex etc forever and I ferther give my said kinsman John Lawrence all my moveable estate of what kind so ever to him and his heirs forever and ferther it is covenanted and agreed between the said Geo. Lawrence and his kinsman John Lawrence is and doth oblidge himself his heirs Exers or Adms by this Instrument of writing that he will at all times find and provide for the naturrall sucker and maintenance of the said Geo. Lawrence for his life time Good meet Drink Washing and Lodging and all Wairing apparrell fit for his use and also carefullly to look after him in Sickness and ferther it is agreed that the said Geo. Lawrence Shall maintain and fulfill his right to his kinsman in all poynts of agreement aforesaid unto the said John Lawrence and the said John Lawrence doth oblidge himself to perform all his covenances and Bargain & Agreements & performance by him shall stand in full force as we have both partyes agreed to In Witness whereof we have Interchainabley set out hands and fixed our Seals this Six day of November in the Eighteenth year of the Reign of our Soverreigne Lord King George the Second of Great Britain France & Ireland King Defender of the Faith Anno. Dom. 1745 -
