     Henry Lawrence was born circa 1601 in St. Ives, Huntingdonshire, England.2 He married Amy Peyton, daughter of Edward Peyton.2 Henry died on 8 August 1664.2 He was interred in St. Margaret's Chapel in Hertfordshire, England.2

     Henry was about four years old when his father died. He was educated in Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He was a puritan, and like many others, lived for awhile in Holland during the persecution. Henry was twice a member of Parliament from Hertfordshire and also represented other districts. An active support of Oliver Cromwell, he is said to have been Cromwell's second cousin. The Lawrence mansion of St. Ives was occupied b Cromwell from 1631 to 1636. When King Charles was disposed, and a government set up by Oliver Cromwell, Henry Lawrence in 1654 became the President of Cromwell's Council. In 1657 he was gazetted as a member of the House of Lords. He had seven sons and six daughters, not all named here.

     William is often confused with another William, his cousin, the brother of John and Thomas Lawrence, sons of Joan Antrobus Lawrence Tuttle.

     William came to America from England about 1660 arriving in Long Island, New York. He went to New Jersey about 1666. There he was Deputy to first Legislative Assembly 1669-1672, and was Burgess at Middletown, New Jersey in 1671.

     There are questions about the name of the first wife of William. While some researchers indicate that it was Hannah Townsend others doubt this and do not provide a name for his first wife.
