Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.9

Margaret L. Covington was born on 25 December 1784 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina.1,2,3 She married John Hill on 6 January 1800 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina.4 Margaret died on 28 January 1873 in Davidson Co., Tennessee, at age 88.1
On 13 April 1871 Margaret applied for a pension based on John Hill's service in the War of 1812. The pension was based on the Act of 14 February 1871 and was available to those soldiers and widows of soldiers who remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War. Her application was witnessed by her grandchildren, Georgie S. Goodwin and W. L. Hunt. Neighbors Henry Compton and Thomas McCrory made statements about knowing the Hills since 1809.
Margaret in a statement quoted from the Family Bible, "John Hill was born in Rockingham County North Carolina May 29, 1782 and married to margaret (sic) Covington June 6, 1800 who was born December 25, 1784. They removed to the State of Tennessee December 1809."
On 18 January 1873, Margaret's pension of $8.00 per month was approved commencing February 14, 1871, the date of the Act. Margaret died 28 January 1873. Her last payment and probably only payment was mailed February 1, 1873 in Nashville. Margaret probably never saw a cent of her pension and it most likely went to her daughter Margaret Catherine Hunt.
Margaret L. Hill was listed at age 67, born in North Carolina, as a member of the household of John Hill in Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1850 enumerated 3 September 1850.2
In the Census of 1860 enumerated 4 June 1860, Margaret L. Hill was listed as a head of household in 11th Civil District, Davidson Co., Tennessee. She was listed at age 77, with real estate value of $6,700 and personal estate value of $3,500, born in North Carolina.5
