     Earl Lawrence Smith was born on 5 April 1913 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.^1,2,3 He married Margaret Hope Capps, daughter of Joseph B. Capps and Lauranda Ebaugh, on 28 October 1933 in Franklin, Simpson Co., Kentucky.^4,5 Earl died on 8 September 2001 at age 88. Last residence listed in the Social Security Death Index was Hendersonville, Sumner Co., Tennessee.^6,3 He was interred on 10 September 2001 in Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.⁶

     John Wise Smith Jr. was born on 17 August 1920 in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.^1,2 John died in May 1945 at age 24.¹ He was interred in May 1945 in Limley, France.

     John Jr. was in the Air Force at the beginning of World War II. He was not sent overseas until late 1944. In May 1945, just a few days before the end of the war, he was killed in a plane crash.

     John was also known as Jack.²

     John Wise Smith Jr. was listed as a son at age 10, born in Tennessee, in the household of John Wise Smith [Sr.] in Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1930 enumerated 26 April 1930.²

     Cecil C. Nicks was born on 22 October 1911 in Dickson Co., Tennessee.^1,2 He married Edith Maie Smith, daughter of John Wise Smith [Sr.] and Lessie Maie Lawrence, on 6 September 1937.³ Cecil died after a heart attack on 8 July 2003 at age 91. Last residence listed in the Social Security Death Index was Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.^1,2 He was interred on 10 July 2003 in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.¹

     Lemuel Lawrence was born on 15 April 1803 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee.¹ He married Nancy Daniel on 5 October 1849 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee.^1,2,3 Lemuel died on 8 March 1881 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, at age 77.¹

     On 7 November 1831 a Nancy Lawrence appeared before the Sumner County Court indicating that "she was delivered of a bastard child, which may become chargable to this County, and that Lemuel Lawrence near Jonesborough in the County aforesaid is the father of said child."⁴

     Additional related court records: "Lemuel Lawrence and Robert Lawrence one held afirmly bound to the Justices of the Court of pleas quarter session of said County in the penal sum of five hundred dollars the payment of which we bind ourselves our heirs executors sealed with our seals & dated this 9th day of November 1831. The condition of the above obligation as such that where as one Nancy Lawrence a single woman who made oath that the said Lemuel Lawrence did beget a child on her body which is now 4 months old, now it the said Lemuel Lawrence shall make his personal appearance at such Court of pleas & quarter session held in Sumner County at the Court house in the town of Gallatin on the 2d monday in November 1831 then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force & virtue."

     There were two Lemuel Lawrences in Sumner County records in this period. The other married Nancy Rogers in 1820. Our Lemuel was single at this time and is probably the one mentioned in the lawsuit. The Robert is probably his uncle or could be his older brother.

     After his marriage to Nancy, the heirs, his siblings, to the land purchased for the maintenance of his mother Elizabeth after the death of her husband Charles, sold their shares of that land to Lemuel as noted in the following deeds.

     On 2 January 1849, Robert Lawrence, Anderson Kirkpatrick and his wife Emmaliza Kirkpatrick (daughter of Amah and John Moss), Joseph C. Johnson and his wife Mary Jane Johnson (daughter of Amah and John Moss) sell their share of the land purchased in 1833 for the widow of Charles Lawrence and his children to Lemuel. That deed is as follows:⁵

     We Robert Lawrence Anderson Kirkpatrick and Emmaliza Kirkpatrick his wife Joseph C. Johnson and Mary Jane Johnson his wife have this day bargained and Sold and do hereby transfer and Convey to Lemuel Lawrence 7 his heirs forever in Consideration of Eighty dollars to us paid a tract of land in the State of Tennessee Sumner County and District No. __ Containing by estimation fifty acres be the same more or less and bounded as follows Beginning at the North West corner of a tract belonging to Jacob Howdyshalt dec'd. Running thence West with an old line (formally Rutherford & Pattons) 64 poles to the North East Corner of a tract formerly belonging to Jane Farr thens South 177 poles to a Red Oak thence East b64 Poles to a Stake in the West foundary of line of Said Howdyshalt tract thence North with Said line to the beginning. To have and to hold the same of the Said Lemuel Lawrence his heirs and assigns forever. We do covenant and bind ourselves our heirs and representation to warrant and defend the title of Said land to Lemuel Lawrence his heirs and assigns forever against any claim to be made by us and any Person claiming throught or under us but no farther the 12th day of January A D 1849

     On 5 January 1856, Lemuel sells this land to Mitchell R. Moore as follows:⁵

     On the 1860 U. S. Census he appears in Gallatin Post Office, District 6, of Sumner County as a farmer with no real estate value listed and personal estate of $300. He is listed as Samuel Laneer but the names of his wife and children along with a Katherine Daniel who would be his mother-in-law appears to confirm that Samuel Laneer is Lemuel Lawrence.

     On the 1870 U. S. Census he again appears in Gallatin Post Office, District 5, of Sumner County as a farmer with no real estate value and personal estate of $200.

     It would appear that after selling the land in 1856, Lemuel moved to the Gallatin area and may have rented land to farm.

     By the 1880 U. S. Census, Lemuel and his wife were living with his eldest son, John William in the 8th District of Davidson County. The surname is spelled Laurens on that census.

     Lemuel died 8 March 1881, probably in Nashville, Davidson County. His wife Nancy died 7 August 1883, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where she probably was staying with her son Robert. I have been unable to find the burial of either.

     Lemuel Lawrence was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sumner Co., Tennessee. Enumerated were:
          1 white male 20-30 (Lemuel)
          1 white female 50-60 (unknown)
          1 white female 60-70 (his mother, Elizabeth).⁶

     Lemuel Lawrence was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sumner Co., Tennessee. Enumerated were:
          1 white male 30-40 (Lemuel)
          1 white female 5-10 (could possibly be the bastard child of Nancy Lawrence that he fathered or unknown)
          1 white female 40-50 (possibly Nancy with whom Lemuel begot the child or unknown)
          1 white female 50-60 (possibly his sister Amah or unknown).⁷

     In the Census of 1850 enumerated 9 October 1850, Lemuel Lawrence was listed as a head of household in Sumner Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 50, occupation as a farmer with property value of $600, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Nancy Lawrence and John William Lawrence.⁸

     In the Census of 1860 enumerated 14 June 1860, Lemuel Lawrence was listed as a head of household in Sumner Co., Tennessee. He was listed as Samuel Laneer at age 56, occupation as a farmer with personal estate of $300, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Nancy Lawrence, John William Lawrence, James David Lawrence, Henry Smith Lawrence, Robert W. Lawrence, Frank Johnson Lawrence [Sr.] and Sally S. Lawrence.⁹

     In the Census of 1870 enumerated 23 June 1870, Lemuel Lawrence was listed as a head of household in Sumner Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 66, occupation as a farmer, with personal property of $200, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Nancy Lawrence, Henry Smith Lawrence, John William Lawrence, James David Lawrence, Robert W. Lawrence, Frank Johnson Lawrence [Sr.] and Felix W. Lawrence.¹⁰

     Lemuel Lawrence was listed as father at age 66, born in Tennessee, in the household of John William Lawrence in Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1880 enumerated 9 June 1880.¹¹

     Nancy Daniel was born on 18 January 1819 in North Carolina.¹ She married Lemuel Lawrence on 5 October 1849 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee.^1,2,3 Nancy died on 7 August 1883 in Bowling Green, Warren Co., Kentucky, at age 64.¹

     Nancy was also known as Nannie.

     Nancy Lawrence was listed at age 33, born in North Carolina, as a member of the household of Lemuel Lawrence in Sumner Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1850 enumerated 9 October 1850.⁴

     Nancy Lawrence was listed at age 31 (sic), born in North Carolina, as a member of the household of Lemuel Lawrence in Sumner Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1860 enumerated 14 June 1860.⁵

     Nancy Lawrence was listed at age 50, born in North Carolina, as a member of the household of Lemuel Lawrence in Sumner Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1870 enumerated 23 June 1870.⁶

     Nancy Lawrence was listed as mother at age 61, born in Tennessee, in the household of John William Lawrence in Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1880 enumerated 9 June 1880.⁷

     Robert W. Lawrence was born on 6 April 1854 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee.¹ He married Alice Rhea Murphy on 26 December 1878 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee.² Robert died of "hardening of the brain" caused by printing ink fumes on 19 February 1892 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, at age 37.^1,3 He was interred on 22 February 1892 in Green Lawn Cemetery in Franklin, Simpson Co., Kentucky.⁴

     Robert W. and his brother Henry Smith were twins. He worked as a printer in Kentucky.^5,3

     Robert W. Lawrence was listed at age 6, born in Tennessee, as a member of the household of Lemuel Lawrence in Sumner Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1860 enumerated 14 June 1860.⁶

     Robert W. Lawrence was listed at age 16, born in Tennessee, occupation as a farm laborer, as a member of the household of Lemuel Lawrence in Sumner Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1870 enumerated 23 June 1870.⁷

     In the Census of 1880 enumerated 1 June 1880, Robert W. Lawrence was listed as head of household in Franklin, Simpson Co., Kentucky. He was listed at age 25, occupation as a printer, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Alice Rhea Lawrence.⁸

     Frank Johnson Lawrence [Sr.] was born on 9 June 1856 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee.^1,2,3,4,5 He married Mattie Blunkall on 8 August 1878 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.⁶ Frank died on 20 June 1945 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama, at age 89.⁷ He was interred in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.⁸

     Frank was a chancery court officer for 22 years in Nashville, Tennessee.

     Frank Johnson Lawrence [Sr.] was listed at age 3, born in Tennessee, as a member of the household of Lemuel Lawrence in Sumner Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1860 enumerated 14 June 1860.⁹

     Frank Johnson Lawrence [Sr.] was listed at age 14, born in Tennessee, as a member of the household of Lemuel Lawrence in Sumner Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1870 enumerated 23 June 1870.¹⁰

     In the Census of 1880 enumerated 9 June 1880, Frank Johnson Lawrence [Sr.] was listed as head of household in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 24, occupation as a farm laborer, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Mattie Lawrence.¹¹

     Frank J. Lawrence was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census enumerated 5 June 1900, in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 43, occupation as a hardware clerk, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Mattie Lawrence.²

     Frank Johnson Lawrence [Sr.] was listed as the head of a family on the 1910 Census enumerated 23 April 1910, in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 53, occupation as a shipping clerk at a telephone office, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Mattie Lawrence.³

     Frank Lawrence was listed as the head of a family on the 1920 Census enumerated 7 January 1920, in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 63, occupation as a court officer at the court house, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Mattie Lawrence.⁴

     In the Census of 1930 enumerated 9 April 1930, Frank Johnson Lawrence [Sr.] was listed as head of household in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 73, occupation as court officer in Chancery Court, born in Tennessee. Also enumerated in the household: Mattie Blunkall.⁵

     Felix W. Lawrence was born on 16 January 1862 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee.¹ He died probably 17 September 1907 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, at age 45.² He was interred in Spring Hill Cemetery on Henry S. Lawrence lot in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.²

     There are two Felix W. Lawrences in this area of Tennessee, one born in 1861 and one in 1862. There is a marriage record for a Felix Lawrence and an Ida English on 14 October 1884 in Davidson Co. There also is another marriage record for a Felix Lawrence and a Mattie Patterson on 22 December 1905. Additonally there is another Felix Lawrence born in Ireland in 1861 listed in Davidson Co. in the 1880 U. S. Census. After much studying I am led to believe that the Felix that married Ida English is probably Felix the son of Lanis and Eliza Lawrence, not the son of Lemuel. I'm unsure who the Felix is that married Mattie Patterson in 1905, maybe a second marriage for Felix son of Lanis. To add to the confusion I can never find Ida on a census record. In 1900 in Sumner Co. there is a Felix Lawrence born in April 1861 with a wife Mary E. and indication that they have only been married two years. A Felix Lawrence died 17 September 1907 in Nashville and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.

     I've come to the conclusion that the Felix Lawrence, son of Lemuel probably died before the 1880 U. S. Census.

     Felix W. Lawrence was listed at age 8, born in Tennessee, as a member of the household of Lemuel Lawrence in Sumner Co., Tennessee, in the Census of 1870 enumerated 23 June 1870.³

     John William Lawrence was born on 30 June 1850 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee.^1,2,3,4 He married Elizabeth D.
