Children of Henry and Alpha Omega Hill

Narrative

Henry was also known as Barber.

Henry Smith and his twin brother Robert W. were the third and fourth sons of Lemuel Lawrence and Nancy Daniel. He married Alpha Omega Hill in 1878 and in the 1880 U. S. Census was listed with Alpha and their first son, Carl G., as a farmer next to his father-in-law, Alexander Hill. He may have actually been living with his father-in-law and assisting on his farm.

By 1900, he was involved in the furniture business. Family tradition indicated that he was a cabinet maker. His obituary indicated that he first worked for the H. Cohan funiture company and then the Harley-Holt furniture company where he was employed at the time of his death at age 77. At that time he was one of their oldest employees and was working up to the time of his death.

The 1900 U. S. Census shows him living at 604 Twelfth Street in Nashville and indicates he was a carpenter working for a furniture company. He later moved to 510 S. Twelfth Street where he is shown in the 1910 through 1930 U. S. Census. Next door at 508 S. Twelfth Street lived his older brother John and later John's son Allen B.

For many years Henry and Alpha were active members of the East End Methodist church. Henry and Umma lost their two youngest daughters, Maggie and Lizzie, within nine days of each other in 1901, one from diphtheria and the other from scarlet fever. Maggie was partially paralized due to an accident. Her mother, Umma (Alpha) had started to town with baby Maggie. A doctor came along and offered her a ride in a buggy. He stopped along the way to make a house call. While Umma and Maggie were waiting in the buggy, the horse bolted. Umma clutched Maggie to her chest where she had a silver dollar tied around her neck. The silver dollar pressed against Maggie's temple partially paralyzing her.

The two oldest children of Henry and Umma married and had families. Carl married Jessie Kidder Harper and had nine children. Lessie married John Wise Smith and had five children.

     Henry's obituary:

Narrative

Margaret was also known as Maggie.

Maggie was partly paralyzed. According to family tradition provided by Thelma Louise Lawrence, Umma had started to town with baby Maggie. A doctor came along and offered her a ride in a buggy. He stopped along the way to make a house call. While Umma and Maggie were waiting in the buggy, the horse bolted. Umma clutched Maggie to her chest where she had a silver dollar tied around her neck. The silver dollar pressed against Maggie's temple paralyzing her.

The following "Tribute of Respect to the Memory of Maggie Lawrence" was adopted by the East End M. E. Church.
The Sunday School of the East End M. E. Church South, at the regular meeting Sunday, November 10, 1901, the following expressions were adopted:

The relations between friend and friend do not cease with life. Death removes but the body; the effect of a life, the labors, acts, deeds, remain as an example of the good works of the departed. The influence of a Christian life abides with us, memory clings to the name and character, and the forms and faces are impressed on our dearest recollections, and their kindly acts are imprinted on our hearts.

And since it has pleased our Almighty God to call from us, and take to Himself on Wednesday, October 30, 1901, our much-loved friend and member, it is the espression of this Sunday School, that in the death of Maggie Lawrence we have lost a faithful and true member. She has won a warm place in our hearts because of the love and fidelity which she has always shown since she was old enough to attend Sunday School.

While we feel so deeply our loss, yet we know that the influence of her quiet, gentle ways lives with us still, and we look forward to the bright day when she will greet us on the other shore.

And we tender our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of the deceased, and it is ordered that this memoriam be entered upon our record and a copy of the same be sent to the family of the deceased.4

Children of Carl and Jessie Kidder Harper

Narrative

Carl married Jessie Kidder Harper in 1902. Family tradition says they had a Gretna Green wedding (eloped). Their first child, Carl Jr., was born in 1903. On the 1910 U. S. Census they were living in Nashville at 519 Eleventh Street South and Carl was working as an engraver for a newspaper. Their residence as about a block over from where his parents lived on Twelfth Street.

On the 1920 U. S. Census Carl is listed in the 11th Civil District and no street address is given. The following census pages listed addresses on Eleventh Avenue so it may well be that Carl was still living on Eleventh Avenue also. His occupation is listed as a photo-engraver for a printing company. Jessie, his wife, was listed with an occupation of clerk in a drug store. The ages of Carl's children on the 1920 U. S. Census are all incorrect. Actually the ages are off by one line. If you take Carl Jr. and move him to the top of the list of children as he is the oldest, leaving the ages on the lines recorded and moving all other children down one line then the children and ages match.

Sometime between September 1921 and March 1924, Carl moved the family to Cobb County, Georgia. His son Paul Haywood was born in Nashville on 23 September 1921 and their youngest son and last child was born on 10 March 1924 in Smyrna, Cobb Co., Georgia.

By 1930, the family had moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where they are listed on the census at 115 61st Street. His occupation is listed as an engraver-photograph. It's my understanding that he work for a newspaper but later ran his own photo-engraving company. I believe this is the residence where they lived for most of the rest of their lifes and where he was living on my visits as a young child. I can remember dinners there that included several of his children and grandchildren. The adults ate at the dining room table while all of the grandchildren ate in another room supervised by my sister, Jessie Lou Lawrence, who was the oldest of all of the cousins.

Carl's wife, Jessie, died from cancer in 1948. At the time of his death in 1966, Carl was living with his daughter Louise Attison in Trussville, Alabama, and was blind.

For example, Irene's true age is 13, the age on the line beneath her given for Henry R. This continues to the last child listed, Carl G. Jr., who's true age is 16 (not 7/12). If you insert Carl Jr.'s name at the top of the list of children where it should be moving each child's name down one line leaving the ages where they are then the ages are correct for the children.

Elizabeth Ruth Lawrence was born on 15 February 1892 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.1,2 Elizabeth died of scarlet fever on 8 November 1901 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, at age 9.3 She was interred on 9 November 1901 in Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.4

Narrative

Elizabeth was also known as Lizzie.

The following was expressed by the Sunday School at the East End M. E. Church.
In Memory of Lizzie.

East End Sunday School desires to express their sorrow in the loss by death of one of their number, Lizzie Lawrence, which took place Nov. 8, 1901, as as a school, we resolve to submit the following to the bereaved family to express our sympathy; for indeed we feel their loss is our loss:

"There is a Reaper whose name is Death,
And with his sickle keen,
He reapes the bearded grain at a breath,
And the flowers that grow between.
'Shall I have naught that is fair' saith he,
'Have naught but the bearded grain?
The breath of these flowers is sweet to me
But I'll give the all back again.'
And the mother gave in tears and pain
The flowers she most did love,
She knew she would find them all again
In the fields of light above."

Even Death must needs have the young -- who does not love a little child, and what is a home without children; and a home that has been robbed of a loving and a lovable child is desolution indeed. Surely a loving Father does not permit such awful calamities to come upon his children without a wise purpose.

Who knows but that he needs them to perfect the happiness of our heavenly homes, in a way that no one but a child can do; and as we remember little Lizzie on last Children's Day, representing spring with the lovely flowers all about her, talking to her little classmates about the birds and blossoms praising god by making the heart of man glad, and that they too would praise Him my making their loved ones happy with their sweet voices, it may be that He needed her services up there with His own little folks. Then we like to fancy our Savior's being made so glad by their sweet baby ways and their innocent fun and frolic that He can scarcely refrain from taking them to himself when He sees them already -- 'of such as His kingdom.'

It is for such a little while if we remain faithful ought we not to bear the pain of separation for Him who redeemed us and made it possible for us to meet them again? Some one has spoken about how much we need all our little faithful workers for the future church; true, but Lizzie can do more for the cause by her short life and by dying as she did that by living a long life of faithful service in the church.

Her death should be an inspiration to every older member. If Lizzie, after having cheerfully done all the things she was asked to do in the best way she could, and trusting her Savior for all the rest, could pass from this live into the next singing that grant old hymn, "Praise god from whom all blessings flow' -- then why can't we hope to pass out rejoicing, if we are doing the best we can in the places assigned to us?

Yes, 'a little child can lead us,' even in dying.

Signed by Annie Lou Marshall, Ada Hunter, and S. H. Bowers.5

Family of Carl and Stella ?

Narrative

Carl Jr. was born in 1903 in Nashville, Tennessee, and can be found with his parents on the 1910 and 1920 U. S. Census in Nashville. It appears that sometime in the early 1920s he moved to Detroit, Michigan, for awhile. He may have stayed with his aunt Lessie Smith, her husband John Wise Smith, and their family. The Smith family was listed on the 1920 U. S. Census as residing in Detroit, Wayne Co. In an interview with their oldest son, Earl Lawrence Smith, in the late 1990s Earl related remembering Carl walking down railroad tracks in Detroit playing the saxaphone.

By 1924, Carl Jr. was in Georgia where he probably met and married Kathleen Harr. Sometime between 1921 and 1923, his father had moved the family from Nashville to Cobb Co., Georgia. Kathleen, whose mother had died in 1913 was partially raised by her mother's sister Della Matthiessen who was listed in the 1920 U. S. Census as residing in Lemons, Cobb Co., Georgia. Kathleen probably was living there when she met Carl Jr. Carl considered Paul Matthiesen, the eldest son of Della and Jacob (Jake) Matthieson, as one of his favorite friends.

Carl apparently moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, for a short period of time after the marriage as that is where his eldest child, Jessie Louise, was born in 1928. Knoxville was the home of the father and step-mother of his wife Kathleen. By 1930, however they had moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where his father was now living and was listed on the 1930 U. S. Census as a photo-engraver at a newspaper office. I believe that he and his father, who also was a photo-engraver, were probably working at the same newspaper office in Birmingham. There is a photo of them and several other employees at a dinner which is undated but I believe may have been some of the staff of the newspaper.

About 1934, Carl and family moved to Springfield, Ohio. In 1936 they moved 1111 Broadway Street in Springfield where they lived when their son Paul was born in 1937. At the time Carl was employed at the newspaper as a photo-engraver. According to their daughter Jessie, Carl, at some time while living in Springfield, tried to go into business for himself but was unsuccessful.

Among their neighbors on Broadway were the Currys who lived two houses up and had a daughter Sondra who was about the age of their son Paul. Next the the Currys were Ralph and Hazel Nelson with their son David who was about the age of their daughter Jessie and next to the Nelsons were the Robeys. For awhile Carl's sister Thelma, her husband James Newsome, and their family lived a few houses further up on Broadway. The Newsomes were living in Springfield when their son James Jr. was born in 1941.

During World War II, Carl was an Air Raid Warden for the neighborhood on Broadway. Whenever there was an air raid warning it was his duty to go out and check the neighborhood to make sure no lights were visable from any of the homes. This was a periodic exercise during the War to prepare for the event of an air attack by the enemy. I doubt that even if enemy planes were able to reach the United States that any would ever reach as far inland as Springfield.

Sometime after June 1945, the family moved to Southern Avenue in Springfield. In the fall of 1945 the family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where they initially lived at 112 North 61st Street, near the parents of Carl. By the fall of 1946 they had moved to Nashville, Tennessee.

In 1947 Carl and Kathleen divorced. Carl moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kathleen and the kids remained in Nashville. About 1948, Paul went to Cincinnati to join his father who had remarried. Jessie remained in Nashville where she had graduated from high school and was employed.

Carl and his second wife separated about 1949 and he later reunited with Kathleen in Cincinnati. They moved to Youngstown, Ohio, in 1950, returning to Cincinnati in 1951. In late 1953 or early 1954 the family moved to Dayton, Ohio.

In early 1955, Kathleen suffered a nervous breakdown and was hospitalized. Carl took a job in Charlotte, North Carolina. Paul, who was senior in high school and was employed, did not want to move to Charlotte so he remained in Dayton to finish his senior year.

Carl died in November of 1955 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

     Carl's obituary:
