Couch Family

This Couch family appears to be descended from a Richard Couch, born circa 1509 in Cornwall, England.

The Couch family can be found in North Carolina, primarily Durham and Orange Counties, in the 1700s along with the Daniel family. Circa 1771 a Susannah Couch married John Daniel. Their son John Daniel married Catherine Couch in Orange Co., North Carolina 28 December 1814. John and Catherine first appear in Sumner Co., Tennessee, in the 1840 U. S. Census with what appears to be one son and three daughters. Their daughter Nancy married Lemuel Lawrence (my 2nd great-grandfather) in 1849. John Daniel wrote his will in 1849 and died in 1850. His will mentions his three daughters but there is no mention of the son. The son may have died prior to John writing his will. Catherine appears on the 1850 census next to Lemuel Lawrence and her daughter Nancy. She's listed with three children ages 10, 8, and 6 who may be the children of her unknown son who has died. In 1860, she was listed in the census living with Lemuel and Nancy. Catherine was last known to be living with her daughter Frances who is also a widow in Logan Co., Kentucky, in the 1870 U. S. Census.

Whereas I have been able to identify the ancestry of Susannah Couch I have been unable to connect Catherine (or Catey) to any of the Couch families in Orange County at the time. I am anxious to hear from anyone who may have information on the ancestry of Catherine Couch. Also, if anyone finds any errors or questionable information here please let me know.

Daniel Family

This Daniel family appears to be descended from a Robert de Manners, born circa 1038, a son of a de Manners from France or England born circa 1010. The surname evolved from de Manners, Danyers, Danniell, Daniels, to Daniel without the "s" which appears to be the form of the surname used by this branch of the family.
