     Thomas Nokes Jr. was born between 1810 and 1820.1 He married Susan Mullins before 1835. Thomas died before 28 June 1847.2

Narrative

     On 7 November 1834, Thomas Nokes, Jr. of Warren Co. deeded ten acres on the head waters of dry fork of Smith's Fork to G. W. Rose of the same place. 3

     Katherine Taylor deeded 50 acres on Sickamore Fork of Clear Fork of Smith Fork, it being land on which the said Katherine now liveth to Thomas Nokes on 14 October 1839. Thomas Nokes deeded 50 acres in the 10th District to Alfred S. Hancock on 26 October 1840.4 On 20 June 1837, Drury Spurlock of Warren County deeded 60 acres on Kerby's Creek, a branch of clear fork, to Thomas Nokes and on 28 October 1841, Drury Spurlock deeded to Thomas Nokes 86 acres on Kerby's branch of clear fork.5 Thomas Nokes deeded 150 acres in the 10th district to Hiram N. Dodd on 31 October 1841.6 Luke Sherley deed 24 acres on the south side of Short Mountain to Thomas Nokes on 23 October 1841.7 On 16 January 1844, Thomas Nokes deeded 30 acres in the 10th District to William C. Nokes.8 On 19 January 1844, Thomas Nokes deeded 40 acres in the 9th District to Asa Smith.9 This could be Thomas Jr. or perhaps some of these transactions may be for his father Thomas Nokes Sr.

     On 19 December 1843, Medford Caffey issued a title bond to Thomas Nokes.10 Thomas Nokes issued a title bond to William Nokes on 14 September 1846.11 Thoams Nokes and Archebald Stone issued a title bond to David M. Jarratt on 28 January 1846.12 These title deeds are subject of a Chancery Court case between Medford Caffey and Susan Nokes and William Nokes, executors of the estate of Thomas Nokes.

     William H. Nokes was born on 3 August 1843 in Tennessee.2,3,4,5,6,1,7 He married Angeline Elizabeth McMurry, daughter of William Clark McMurry and Hannah Elizabeth Sloan, on 25 November 1870.8 William died on 12 September 1918 in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, at age 75.2 He was interred on 13 September 1918 in City Cemetery in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.2

     Simpson McMurry was born on 25 April 1796 in Kentucky.1,2,3 He married Jane Clark, daughter of James Clark and Elce Lockhart, on 10 October 1816 in Clark Co., Kentucky.4

Narrative

     The McMurry plantations were to the south of the town of Donelson. Later the property was owned by the Gillems and the Whitworths. It is now called Bluefields. Simpson lived in back of the of what is now Bluefields.5

     Samuel McMurry, who was killed in 1792 and who was the husband of Sallie Kincaid, had purchased land near Donelson, Tennessee. After his death, Sallie returned to Kentucky with her sons. There a few years later she gave birth to another son, Simpson. The father of Simpson is not known. Samuels sons returned to Donelson to claim the land of their father. Simpson did not share in this claim. Over the years he cared for his half-brother, John, who was intermittently insane and eventually came into possession of some of his land.

     McMurray researcher Carl Seifried McMurray III indicates that a Don McMurray that a Mr. Simpson escorted Sallie and her sons back to Clark Co., Kentucky following her husband's death and he also claims to have documentation that a surname "Simpson" is the father of Simpson McMurray.6

He was listed at age 50, occupation as a farmer with no property value, born in Kentucky. Also enumerated in the household: Jane McMurry, John McMurry, Charles McMurry, Mary J. McMurry and Elizabeth McMurry.2
Census1860In the Census of 1860 enumerated 15 June 1860, Simpson McMurry was listed as a head of household in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was listed at age 55, occupation as a farmer with no real estate value listed and personal estate value of $1600, born in Kentucky. Also enumerated in the household: Jane McMurry, Elizabeth McMurry and John McMurry.3

Major Life Events

     John Henry Sloan was born on 19 June 1804 in Hartford Co., Connecticut.1,2 He was baptized on 3 November 1805.3 He married Angeline Elizabeth Jessup, daughter of Joseph Jessup and Elizabeth Town, on 19 September 1829 in Seventh Presbyterian Church, New York, New York.4,5 John died on 2 September 1890 in Donelson, Davidson Co., Tennessee, at age 86.6 He was interred in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee.7

Narrative

     Families of Early Hartford indicates that John married Rebecca Bowles in 1828. Other sources indicate that he married Angeline Elizabeth Jessup in September 1829. Possibly Rebecca was a first wife and died shortly after the marriage.

     John Henry Sloan and his family moved to Nashville in 1841 where he ran the Leviathan Livery Stable in downtown Nashville in the 1850s.

     His house was "rolled back" to make room for a movie house they build on the original site. The house later burned.8

     He was employed as a blacksmith and later as a farmer.7

He was listed at age 46, occupation as a book binder with property of 13,000, born in Connecticut. Also enumerated in the household: Angeline Elizabeth Sloan, John Henry Sloan Jr., Mary A. Sloan, Charles M. Sloan, Richard Bedford Sloan, Amanda Sloan, David Hopkins and Sementha Hopkins.2

Narrative

     After Samuel was killed, Sallie moved to Clark Co., Kentucky. Her sons evenually moved back to Davidson Co., Tennessee to claimed their father's land. The fourth son, Simpson, was born about four years after Samuel's death. His father is unknown. Simpson did not share in the land divided among his three half-brothers. He, however, took care of John, who was intermittently declared mentally incompetent, and Simpson eventually received some of John's share of the land.
