Children of Lorenzo and Eliza:

Narrative

There had been a tradition that after the marriage Lorenzo and his wife returned to Tennessee but that does not appear to be supported by the facts as census and deeds indicate a continued residence in Iowa. Another tradition is that Lorenzo became interested in Eliza in Tennessee, that the Cate family migrated to a point near Moravia, Iowa and that he followed them there. Eliza was no more than 10 when the Cates migrated to Iowa so that tradition seems unlikely. It is more likely that Lorenzo accompanied his brother Sterling and wife Nancy, Eliza's sister, to Iowa and there became interested in Eliza.

Child of Detmar and Catherine:

Narrative

It has long been thought that Detmar immigrated from Holland and it has been said that he descends from William of Orange. One family tradition states that "Count Detmar Sternbert/Stansbury was the great-grandson of Prince William of the House of Orange (his grandmother was the daughter of Prince William making her a Princess)." This probably refers to William I of Orange (William the Silent) also known as "Father of the Fatherland" for organizing the Dutch revolt against Spanish rule, which after the Eighty Years War led to an independent Dutch state. William I was married four times and had at least three sons and two daughters. It must be one of the daughters that the above references.

The family tradition goes on to state that his Stansbury ancestors were from Holland but before that they were from England. Detmar's grandfather is said to have been an English Earl who fled England to Holland during one of the religious persecutions of the Puritans and in Holland changed his name from Stansbury to Sternberg so that his last name would sound more Dutch than English. This must be who one of the daughters of William I married.

It is then said that Detmar came to America with his wife Catherine Renske and their 6 year old son, Tobias, because he was afraid his son would lose his English heritage and identity. They settled in Baltimore County, Maryland and their name eventually changed back to Stansbury.5 Detmar immigrated to Maryland circa 1658 with his wife, Catherine, and his son, Tobias.

Narrative

Detmar's wife is commonly referred to as Catherine Renske. However, Renske is the Low German or Dutch diminutive of Catherine. So rather then Renske being her surname it is in all probability her given name which translate to Catherine.

Interpreting the Last Will and Testament of Samuel Stansbury

The will has left many baffled as Samuel names some heirs as sons and daughters where they are actually grandsons and granddaughters or step-sons and step daughters. Others are mentioned in the will with no relationship indicated. I have attempted to identify each individual mentioned in the will.

"Granson William Welch" is actual a grandson, the son of Arabella (Avarilla) Stansbury and William Welch. Some say that Arabella and Avarilla were two separate individuals while others indicate they were the same person.

The relationship of Solomon Stansbury is not given but it is believed that he was a son of Samuel. It appears that Samuel had two sons named Solomon, one who died in 1747 at age 20 and another that lived until 1796. The Solomon mentioned in the will is believed to be the latter.

John Ensor Stansbury (also the executor of the will), son of William is a grandnephew. William is the son of Daniel a brother of Samuel.

Jasper Stansbury Culston (actually Jesse Stansbury Cullison) and Ruth Stansbury Colston (Cullison) are the step-children, the children of Samuel's second wife Mary Ann Stansbury Cullison by her first husband Ebenezer Cullison. It has been indicated by some that Mary Ann's maiden name was Stansbury but her parents have not been identified.

"Daughter Tabathay Cross" is Samuels daughter Tabitha who married William Cross as her second husband.

Dela (Delilah) Stanfor is Samuel's daughter Delia who appears to have married an unknown Stanford.

Sebedy Hicks is grandson Zebedee Hicks son of Tabitha and her first husband William Hicks.

Marthiar Galloy is grandson Mathias or Matthew Galloway son of Bethia and her husband Aquilla Galloway.

Ruth Hicks is a granddaughter, daughter of Tabitha and her first husband William Hicks.

Polly Stansbury Colston is step-daughter Mary (Polly) Stansbury Culliston daughter of Samuel's second wife Mary Ann and her first husband Ebenezer Cullison.

It's uncertain who Benjamin Stansbury who witnessed the will actually is. He could be a grandson, the son of Samuel's son Samuel Jr. or the son of either Thomas or Daniel, sons of Samuel's brother Thomas.

Narrative

Jeremiah enlisted on 26 December 1776 from Amherst Co., Virginia for six months in the Revolutionary War as a private in the 10th Virginia Regulars under Capt. James Franklin. The company muster roll of 31 May 1777 shows that he and his brother, John, deserted on 15 March 1777. Bork indicates that Mr. Ray Blevins had related to her and that she had heard the same story while in Wayne Co., Kentucky on several trips, that Jeremiah of Wayne was called "Big Jerry." and was a champion bare-fist fighter. He is said to have bitten a finger from an opponent when the opponent played dirty. Also Jerry had captured two British Officer's and to humiliate them, he made them drink whiskey from his hands until they became drunk. Realizing the difficulty he faced, due to his conduct, he went AWOL from the Army.6

Major Life Events

Judah ? was born circa 1773 at Virginia.1,2 She married Moses Burnett, son of Jeremiah Burnett [II] and Elizabeth Claybrook. Judah died in February 1864 at Knox Co., Tennessee.

Children of Judah and Moses:

Narrative

It should be noted that Griffin W. Burnett was the only child proven to be Judah's. The others listed are based on researched by York outlined in Tennessee Ancestors that names likely children for Judah.

York indicated that the husband of Judah is a mystery. There are some family trees on Ancestry.com that name Moses Burnett, son of Jeremiah Burnett and Elizabeth Claybrook, as her husband. He would be of the correct age and died in 1836. There were two Moses Burnetts born circa 1770-1771. One was the son of Jeremiah Burnett and Elizabeth Claybrook and the other was the son of Jeremiah's brother Charles Burnett who married Catharine Brock. One of these Moses married Elizabeth Medley 2 August 1792, in Henry Co., Virginia. Some trees on Ancestry.com indicate that this was the Moses son of Jeremiah and some indicate the she was an additional wife for Moses the possible husband of Judah. Still other trees indicates that the Moses that married Elizabeth Medley was the son of Charles. Bork in her Burnett Connections, Vol. 2, page 66, indicates that the Moses that married Elizabeth Medley was the son of Charles and Catharine Brock. To confuse the matter further, numerous tress on Ancestry.com indicates that Moses son of Charles Burnett and Catherine Brock married Rebecca Morley. However these trees indicate that this Moses was born in 1740, and seem to overlook the fact, as stated in their trees, that his father Charles was born in 1743, three years after Moses birth! In conclusion, it may be possible that Judah's husband was Moses Burnett son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Claybrook.

Judah made a will on 19 February 1859.

In the name of God, Amen. I, Juda Burnett, of the County of Knox & the State of Tennessee, being of sound mind & memory & considering the uncertainty of this frail & transitory life, do make, ordain, publish & declare this to be my last Will & Testament…that is to say…after my lawful debts are paid & discharged, the residue of my estate real & personal, I give, bequeath & dispose of as follows: #1 - All the property, real & personal, that I have or will remain to me from my son G. Burnett becomes of age, then I make said Jackson T. Burnett, my Executor.
