William Raygen Foster was born on 23 June 1936 at Knoxville, Knox Co., Tennessee.1 William died on 6 October 1949 at Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, at age 13 in a motor bike accident.1 He was interred in October 1949 at Lynnhurst Cemetery at Fountain City, Knox Co., Tennessee.1

Narrative

William was also known as Raygen.

     Article concerning Raygen's death:

William Foster Rites Set in Fountain City

Funeral services for William Raygen Foster, 13-year old Stokes School football captain, who was killed last night in a motorbike collision, will be held in Fountain City, Tenn. Burial will be in the Lynnhurst Cemetery there.
The body of the boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. V. O. Foster of 1121 Belvedere Drive, will be at the Bracey-Welsh Funeral Home here until midnight tonight and will then be conveyed to the Mynatt Funeral Home in Fountain City. Time of the services has not been set.
Young Foster died when his motorbike struck the automobile shortly after 8 p.m. at the Lealand Land-Woodmont Boulevard intersection.
The boy was killed instantly when his motor bicycle hit the side of a car driven by Joe Goldberg, 66, of 3821 Harding Road.
Dist. Atty. Gen. J. Carlton Loser said Goldberg will be charged with driving a motor vehicle without a license. Futher investigation was planned, the attorney general said, but indications today were that no other charges in connection with young Foster's death would be brought.
Asst. Atty. Gen. John Askew and Special Investigator John Fields of the district attorneyy's office said they found evidence to indicate that the boy, who was headed south on Lealand Lane, did not stop at the intersection and crashed into the side of the jeep station wagon driven by Goldberg. A small flashlight, found at the scene, was presumably carried by the boy, but there were no lights on the bicycle itself, Loser said.
Goldberg, who witnesses said was not speeding, pulled his car into a front lawn on Woodmont Boulevard in an effort to avoid the boy.
The Foster boy was a son of the assistant secretary-editor of the Tennessee State Medical Association and public relations director for the Nashville Academy of Medicine.
He was born June 23, 1936, in Knoxville and formerly lived in Clinton where his father was city judge before moving to Nashville in 1946.
The boy attended school in Clinton and at the time of his death was in the eight grade at Stokes School where he was also captain of the football team.
The Foster youth was a member of Woodmont Baptist Church and was a Boy Scout.
Besides his parents, survivors are a brother, Edward Hunter Foster, 16; and three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Foster of Heiskell, and Mrs. J. E. Foster and R. H. Harr, all of Knoxville. (Note: last paragraph as appeared in article, it appears Mrs. J. E. Foster is listed twice.)1

Major Life Events

Edward Hunter Harr was born on 4 November 1847 at Washington Co., Virginia.1,2,3,4,5 He married Columbia Caroline Byerly, daughter of John W. H. Byerly and Amanda Henton, on 3 September 1874 at Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas.1,6,7 Edward died of of typhoid fever on 6 September 1884 at Johnson City, Washington Co., Tennessee, at age 36.8 He was interred in September 1884 at Old Harr Cemetery at Sullivan Co., Tennessee.8

Children of Edward and Columbia:

Narrative

Edward Hunter Harr married Columbia (Lummie) Byerly in Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas, at the residence of R. L. Dishner. Robert L. Dishner's wife, Elizabeth, was a sister of Lummie. Edward's father, David, had moved his family to Kansas in 1871. Columbia's father, John Byerly, also moved from Tennessee to Kansas but not until 1880 according to John's obituary. Columbia may have been in Kansas visiting some relatives when she married Edward or may have come to Kansas for the specific purpose of marrying Edward. Edward and Columbia may have known each other before Edward's family moved to Kansas since the Harr and Byerly families had lived in Sullivan Co., Tennessee, during the same time period.

Edward returned to Tennessee moving to Washington Co. prior to 1880. On the U. S. Census of 1880 Edward's brothers John and William are listed in his household. Edward Harr served as Worshipful Master for the Masonic Lodge in Johnson City, Tennessee. His picture hangs on the Wall of former Masters.

Edward Hunter Harr apparently died from typhoid fever shortly after being elected sheriff in 1884. Family tradition has that, as a widow, Lummie supported herself and her children after Edward's death by taking in sewing.

The following is a transcription from the Johnson City, Tennessee Comet.

Sheriff elect, Ed. H. Harr, is very low with typhoid fever. A host of friends are shuddering to see this exceptionally good man so near unto death. There is hope that he may be spared to raise his precious children and to still bless the community with his noble deeds and pure life.9

Edward Hunter Harr died on that date according to the tombstone inscription. Two other related articles appeared in the Johnson City Comet.

The first: The county court will elect sheriff to fill vacancy caused by death of Mr. Ed. Harr.

The second: John Eakin for the Masonic Lodge at this place made arrangements with the railroad authorities for the midnight train to stop Sunday night at Union and take on the men who went from this place to the burying of Mr. Harr in Sullivan County. Twenty three of the number waited until 2 a. m. for the train. The train came and went rushing by leaving the men to wait for the morning train.10

Tombstone inscription for E. H. Harr in old Harr cemetery, Sullivan County, Tennessee reads as follows:

E. H. Harr
Born Nov. 4, 1847
Died Sept. 6, 1884
Aged 36 yrs 10 mos 2 days

I hope to meet with thee again
in yon bright world above11.

Children of David and Mary:

Narrative

     The Civil War

David Harr (Jr.) as well as his brothers Adam and Elkanah served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

According to combined Confederate Civil War records located at the National Archives in Washington, D. C., David Harr was enlisted on Sept. 25, 1862, by Maj. J. A. Rhea, in G Company of Crawford's Regiment of the 60th Mounted Infantry for a period of three years. He was listed on company muster rolls Sept. 25, 1862; Nov. 7, 1862; Jan. & Feb. 1963; Mar. & Apr. 1863; and from May 1, 1863, to Apr. 30, 1864 (dated Sept. 10, 1864). He was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, and paroled on July 8, 1863, according to the terms of capitulation entered into by the commanding Generals of the United States and Confederate forces. Under the release condition that David Harr signed, he was "not to take up arms against the United States, nor serve in any military police or constabulary force in any Fort, garrison, or field work held by the Confederate States of America, nor as guard of prisons, depots or stores, nor discharge any duties usually performed by Officers or soldiers, against the United States of America, until duly exchanged by the proper authorities."

He next appeared on a roll dated Aug. 18, 1864, at Zollicoffer, Tennessee, of officers and men who were paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 4, 1863, and who have reported at Zollicoffer, Tennessee, prior to Aug. 15, 1864.

Next David appeared on prisoner of war records at Knoxville, Tennessee, stating that he was captured Dec. 14, 1864, at Sullivan County, Tennessee, and sent to Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dec. 25, 1864. The following prisoner of war records indicate that his capture was at Bristol, Tennessee and follow his captivity through the end of the war: a roll dated Jan. 8, 1865, Nashville, Tennessee, indicated that he was being forwarded to Louisville, Tennessee (believe they meant Kentucky); arrival at Louisville, Kentucky, Jan. 11, 1865; sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, Jan. 14, 1865; paroled at Camp Chase, Ohio and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, Feb. 17, 1865, for exchange; and finally appears on a Hospital Muster Roll (not dated, but with an indication that he was paid March 6, 1865 and that he had last been paid May 1, 1864) at the 5th Division, General Hospital Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia.8

His first wife, Mary Jane, died July 27, 1865, evidently either before he returned home or shortly thereafter. The marriage record for his first marriage has never been found. He married his second wife, Mary Ann Leonard, on Apr. 9, 1866, in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Mary Ann, maiden name unknown, evidently had been married to a Leonard and had a small child named Able whom she brought into the marriage to David.

On to Kansas

David Harr and family moved to Jackson Township, Lyon Co., Kansas, about 1871. In August of 1871, his son Raleigh and step-son Able drowned in the Neosho River. His son Edward Hunter married in Emporia, Kansas in 1874.

David eventually became a merchant in Neosho Rapids, Kansas. The following appeared in the Neosho Valley Press, Jan. 20, 1887 - Uncle David Harr has just received several tons of Topeka flour and can supply you with the best the market affords at from $1.10 to $1.50 per sack. He endeavors to keep at all times a full supply of beef, pork, lard, sausage, butter and everything usually found in a well regulated meat market and at prices to suit the times. Give him your trade in the above articles.

In the Township Clerk's book, Jackson Township, Lyon County, Kansas, David was granted a license to run a pool table on Lot (12) Block (33) in the town of Neosho Rapids for a term of one year, for payment of $50, on 14th day of May 1886. The license was again granted for a term of one year from June 1, 1887, upon payment of the sum of fifty dollars.

From the above it would appear that David died sometime between 1887 and 1900. On the 1900 U. S. Census for Lyon Co., Kansas, his wife Mary was listed as a widow. His youngest child also was born in 1887. David was a merchant at Lyon Co., Kansas, circa 1887.

Children of Mary and David:

Narrative

David's and Mary Jane's estimated marriage date is based on census data considering the ages of their children.

Mary Jane is possibly the daughter of Gasper Leonard who in the 1830 U. S. Census are shown living near the household of David Harr. Also shown nearby is Samuel Leonard. Both are brothers of Mary Ann Leonard, David's mother. Of the two, only Gasper has females enumerated in the correct age range that would correspond to Mary Jane's age.

Also buried in the Old Harr Cemetery are Mary's sons David E. and Edward Hunter.

John W. H. Byerly was born on 25 May 1817 at Rockingham Co., Virginia.1,2,3,4,5 He married Amanda Henton, daughter of Peter Henton Jr. and Mary Sellers, on 26 October 1840 at Rockingham Co., Virginia.6,7 John died of heart failure on 31 August 1893 at Lyon Co., Kansas, at age 76.2

Children of John and Amanda:

Narrative

John and Amanda had twelve children, eight girls and four boys, six of which were still living at his death in 1893. Shortly before the Civil War, in 1858, according to the obituary of his son William, he moved with his family to Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He remained there until 1874 when he moved to Blount Co., Tennessee. In 1880 he and his wife moved to Lyon Co., Kansas with his son William. He was a member of the Dunkard church.

     John's Obituary:

John Byerly passed peacefullly to the other shore where mortals weep no more Thrusday morning, Aug. 31st, 1893. He had been afflicted for several months with heart failure. Deceased was a man of years, aged 76 years, 3 months and 6 days.
John Byerly, father of the late Wm. Byerly, was born in Rockingham Co., Va., May 25, 1817. Was married to Amanda Henton in 1840. The fruits of this marriage were twelve children, eight girls and four boys, six of whom are still living. A short period before the war he moved with his family to Sullivan Co., Tennessee, remaining there until 1874. He then removed to Blount Co. and in 1880 he and his wife came to Kansas with his son, William, to whom we have before alluded.
Mr. Byerly was a devout christian, having been a member of the Dunkard church for about twenty-four years. He always possessed a faith, an eternal hope that reached beyond the skies.
The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Pigman, were held at the residence of his son in law, R. L. Dishner, near the Junction, where he had remained during his severest afflictions. The commodious residence was well filled and yet a greater number would have been present had the sad event been more widely known. The song service impressively rendered by the choir thrilled one with almost a divine sweetness. The casket was handsomely decorated with the choicest flowers which betokened the kindness of loving friends.
Many are the hearfelt sympathies extended to the bereaved relatives who were present, also to those whose distance prohibited them from attending the last sad rites of the departed, but a deeper and more profound sympathy is bestowed upon the bereft companion who yet remains to bear life's burdens.

"How like the flowers is he whose transient life is ended.
The hopes and dreams are, that for one brief hour,
Make the sad heart a garder bright and splendid
About love's latticed bower.
A few years of almost perfect pleasure,
A foretaste of the happiness to come.
Then sudden frost--the garden yields its treasure,
And stands in sorrow, dumb.
Oh, list dear hearts! The flower may lose its glory
Beneath the touch of frost, but does not die.
In spring it will repeat the old, sweet story
Of God's dear by and by.
In Heaven, if never here, the hopes we cherish,
The flowers of human lives we count as lost,
Will live again. Such hearts cannot parish,
And Heaven has no frost.

Children of Amanda and John:

Narrative

After her husband's death in Kansas, Amanda evidently returned to Tennessee to live with her daughter Lummie (Columbia) who at that time also was a widow.

In The Byerly's of the Valley of Virginia by John F. Byerly, Jr., page 54, the following is found: "Know all men by these present that I, Silus Henton of the County of Rockingham and State of Virginia, for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which I bear to John W. H. Byerly, Elizabeth J. V. Byerly and Sarah E. Ellen Byerly of the County and State aforesaid but who are now about to remove to the State of Tennessee, as well as for the further consideration of the sum of One Dollar lawful money of the United States to me in hand paid by (named) … have given granted and by these presents do give and grant unto the said (named) their executors and administrators and assigned the following property to wit: Four comforts, three quilts, one counterpane, two coverlets, one feather bed, one chaff tick, three pillows, two feather bolsters, three chairs, one large chest, one set of knifes & forks, and set of dishes. One tea kettle, one iron pan, one skillet, two blankets, and one set of cups and saucers, to have and to hald the said personal property … - [Deed of Gift to John W. H. Byerly and others - 11 October 1855]."

Silas is a first cousin of Amanda. Evidently he must have been fond of the Byerly family that Amanda married into. The Elizabeth J. V. and Sarah E. mentioned are sisters of John W. H. Byerly who Amanda married. Additionally, a sister of Silas', another Amanda, married Joseph Byerly, a brother of John.

Child of Mary and an unknown spouse:

Narrative

A Mary Jane has been included by some as a child of John and Margaret Wilhite and some have indicated she had a daughter Phoebe, apparently illigitimate. However, I have been unable to find any records of Mary. There is a Phoebe listed in the 1900 census as a niece to William and Amanda (Wilhite) Dykes. This is probably the Phoebe attributed to Mary. However, she could have been the daughter of Elisha. Elisha was last listed on the 1880 census as single and with his parents and died in 1887. He could have married and fathered this Phoebe who was born in 1883 between 1880 and his death in 1887.

Children of James and Comfort:

Narrative

James gave land for building the New Hopewell Babtist Church in about 1836. Location of the first church building was only a few yards from the schoolhouse where the church was first organized on this land donated by James. It was considered a rather grand buildng for that day since it was a frame structure as opposed to logs. The church had one extra large room, and the ceiling was rather low. There were two doors in the front end of the building, one for the men and the other for the women. It was the custom in those days for the men to sit on one side of the church and the women to sit on the other side. There was a door in the center of one of the sides to be used by the preachers and a door in the back end of the building which gave easy access to the cemetery and to the wood supply for a big stove. The pulpit was built rather high and had several steps to climb. The building was lighted with candles which the members made at home and brought to the services. The services usually started at early candle-lighting time.

As the population of the area grew, the little school house next door soon became to small to accomodate all of the children and the new church building served as a school during the week and a church on the week ends. This first building lasted until a second building was built in 1880-1882.
