Narrative

Information provided by Janet Gesas Hornick of Englewood, Colorado, in 1998, places John Harr as the son of Simon Harr and Eve Printzler. John settled in Monongalia Co., Virginia, which would later become West Virginia. Marion County History, information submitted by descendant Debra Gill Kines, states "Simon Har lived at different times in Frederick and Shenandoah Counties in Virginia, practicing his profession in each. One of his sons, John, came to Marion County in the 1780s. (Two brothers settled in Pennsylvania and Tennessee respectively.) John Harr married Elizabeth Merrifield as recorded in Reverend Fleming's Marriage Book on April 9, 1800, and built a large stone house near, then Palatine, now part of Fairmont. The house stood for one hundered and fifty years. The area between Palatine and Colfax was called Harr Town." Note: Marion County didn't come into existence until 1842. Prior to that it was Monongalia and Harrison Counties.3
