Children of Frederick and Anna:

Narrative

The Revoluntionary Pension Records, National Archives, Washington, DC, has the following recorded in Record Book D, Vol. 9, 105.
East Tennessee, Frederick Leonard of Sullivan County in the State of Tennessee who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Marshall of the Regiment of Colonel Stuart in the Virginia line, for the term of 4 years and 9 months from 1776 to 1781. Inscribed on the roll of East Tennessee at the rate of Eight Dollars per month, to commence on the 22 day of August 1829. Certificate of Pension issued 18 of October 1839 and sent to G. W. Netherland, Blountville, Ten.6

Frederick applied for a pension 18 May 1829, stating that he was a resident of the United States on March 18, 1818, and had not disposed of any property with intent to diminish it, so that he could come within the provisions of the Act of Congress passed in 1818. He owned 125 acres of broken and stony land in Washington County, Virginia, but upon which from it sterility, he could not subsist, so left. The land was worth but little. He had no family except his wife and no trade. He misplaced his discharge. The Land Certificate of Pension was issued October 28, 1829, and he received $96.00 a year, at age sixty-eight, in Sullivan County, Tennessee, which was more convenient than Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia. He resided in Washington County with just his wife, which was only a few miles from Blountville, Sullivan County, Tennessee. He was living with his son, Henry, when he died in 1845. His original homestead was on the Gate City Highway west of the town of Bristol.7 In the U. S. Census for 1840 for Washington Co., Virginia, in the recapitalation at the end of the reel, Frederick is listed as a Revolutionary War Pensioner at age 82.

In the War he was attacked by two Hessian soldiers and slew them both with his bayonet. He was pursued by other Hessian soldiers but succeeded in escaping by hiding in a cave.

Later, in September 1780, the Revolutionary War came to the Southern Mountains. Major Ferguson of the British Army threatened to burn the crops and homes of this region (Over the Mountain People), and also threatened to hang the leaders, it they did not lay down their arms and pledge allegiance to the King. They responded by raising a furious army. Having returned to Virginia, Frederick joined them. On September 25, 1780, this militia of the Watauga and Holston Valleys at Sycamore Shoals of the Watauga River (Elizabethton) joined the Burke County militia - this group became know as 'Over the Mountain Men'. On September 26th, the men spent the night at Shelving Rock. On September 27th, they crossed Roan Mountain in the snow. Here two men deserted to warn Major Ferguson of the Patriot Army. On October 1st and 2nd, the men stopped to dry out. On October 3rd, the men camped beneath Marlin's Knob beside Cane Creek. On October 4th, the came to Gilbert Town. On October 5th, they went to Green River. On October 6th, the spent the night at Cowpens. On October 7th, with over 900 men (others had joined along the way) at about 3:00 P.M. the Over the Mountain Men went into battle at what is now known as Kings Mountain National Military Park, South Carolina. In little over an hour, Major Ferguson was shot from his horse and killed with some 120 of his men, and his entired command was captured. Major Ferguson is buried at this site. Kings Mountain was the beginning of a successful end to the Revolutionary War. Every year on October 7th, the Park together with the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution and other Societies hold a cermony honoring these 'Over the Mountain Men'. The Overmountain Victory Trail Association group, dressed in authentic attire, still walk from Elizabethton, Tennessee to this Park in South Carolina, coming in over the mountain during the ceremony, after which the different Societies walk up the mountain and lay wreaths at the Monument honoring these men that fought, some giving their lives. Frederick survived and returned home. On October 7, 1999, one of Frederick's great, great, great granddaughters, Shirley Marie Leonard Frederickson, dressed in Colonial attire attended this ceremony and laid a wreath to honor his service in this war.7

Major Life Events

Elizabeth Leonard was born circa 1781 at Virginia.1,2 She married T. S. (Isaac) Sourbeer.3 She married William Galliher on 25 May 1819 at Washington Co., Virginia. There is a marriage record in Washington County, Virginia, of an Elizabeth Leonard marrying a William Galliher on 25 May 1819. Some researchers have indicated that this was a marriage of Elizabeth, daughter of Frederick Leonard but I am not convinced that this is accurate. If it was her second marriage would not the marriage record indicate that William Galliher married Elizabeth Sourbeer. If her first marriage then her Sourbeer marriage would have been much later than the indicated birth of her Sourbeer son, Thomas Jefferson.4 Elizabeth died before 24 September 1840 at Washington Co., Virginia.

Children of Elizabeth and an unknown spouse:

Narrative

In an email received from another researcher it was stated that Elizabeth Leonard had a son the Court of Virginia called a Bastard son. The Court gave her $120 per year for five years for Securities and Maintenence. I have not had the opportunity to search for that source record.

Additonally, the will of Elizabeth's father Frederick Leonard seems to indicate that there was another "out-of-wedlock" child by referring to Mahala, second child of Elizabeth, as "Mahaly formerly Mahaly Leonard" while referring to Elizabeth's other children with the surname Sourbeer.
