William Whitfield [I] was born in 1688 in Scotland.2,3,1 He married Elizabeth Goodman circa 1713 in Chowan Co., North Carolina.2 William died in 1770.3Evidently William's parents had returned to Scotland as William was born there. In the early part of the 18th Centruy, William came to the colonies on his own ship The Providence. He lived in Nansemond Co., Virginia, settled in Bertie Co., North Carolina after he married and later moved to Rockford, Lenoir County. He possibly was killed by Indians between Bertie Co. and Whitehall.1

William Whitfield [II] was born on 20 May 1715 in Nansemond Co., Virginia.1 He married first Mary Copeland.1 He married second Frauzan Mett Becton.1 He married third Rachael Bryan, daughter of Needham Bryan and Ann ?, circa 1741 in Bertie Co., North Carolina.2,3 William died on 31 March 1795 in North Carolina at age 79.1William settled at a plantation called Rockford in Lenoir Co., North Carolina, sometime prior to 1743. He was a member of the Colonial Assembly, a member of the Committee of Safety as well as a member of the Council of the state in 1779. He was a prosperous planter and slaveholder and furnished supplies and ferriage for the patriotic cause. In 1743 he built "White Hall" in Seven Springs, North Carolina1.
William was an ancestor of Nathan Bryan Whitfield, who moved to Marengo County, Alabama. There Nathan purchased land from General Gaines, and built the famous "Gaineswood" estate which he named in honor of the General. The noted and ill-fated architect, Stanford White, said that Gaineswood was the "most exquisitely perfect country home" he ever saw.2

William Lawrence was born circa 1700.3 He married first Penelope Brown, daughter of Samuel Brown.1,4 He married second Sarah Applewhaite, daughter of Henry Applewhaite and Anne Marshall, before 26 July 1746.5 William died before 2 June 1757 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.5William Lawrence lived in Newport Parish of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and deeded a slave to his sister Priscilla Lawrence, for love on 24 May 1739, witnessed by Jeremiah Lawrence and John Lawrence. On 7 October 1739, Dr. Samuel Brown's will mentioned granddaughter Penelope, daughter of William and Penelope Lawrence. On 27 July 1741, William Lawrence, Jeremiah Lawrence, and John Darden appraised the estate of Thomas Loyd, whose widow was Charity Loyd. On 28 April 1742, William Lawrence, William Moore, and Jesse Brown appraised the property of John Daughtry. On 24 March 1745, Charles and Ann Driver deeded to William Lawrence for £5/5/0 Virginia money 150 acres north of Blackwater heired from Ann's mother, Elizabeth Whitfield, who was a daughter of John Harris, adjoining James Baker and William Lawrence.

John Lawrence was born in Nansemond Co., Virginia.1,2 John died before 5 January 1758 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.3,4On 25 February 1739/40, John Lawrence assisted John Bowin and William Fowler in appraising the estate of William Bradshaw. On 25 June 1744, John, John Johnson, and William Fowler appraised the estate of James Tullaugh. On 9 September 1749, John and William Lawrence and William Edmonds appraised Fowler's estate. On 6 August 1752, John Lawrence, Jacob Butler, and James Bryant appraised the estate of William Daughtry. On 5 June, 1755, John and William Lawrence and John Darden appraised the estate of John Daughtry.
On 12 July 1770, Charles and wife Amey sold land to John Lawrence for £50. The land was described as "being in the County of Southampton on the south side of Black Water it being part of a pattein granted to John Lawrence the sixteenth day of December 1714 Bounded as follows: Beginning in the pattein line where George Lawrance's new line begins as bounds him and thence south __East along that new line to the Cattail Branch then along the said Branch to the Pattain line then along the said ____ distance to joyn the said John Lawrances one land and so along Lawrances Land to the Pattain line then along the Pattain on to the begining it is one hundred & fory acres ... as was given the said Charles Lawrance by his uncle Jeremiah Lawrance."5 I believe this John is the John Lawrence in this transaction.
John made a will on 2 March 1757 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. John's will:
(1) grandson Elisha Lawrence Ballard, the home plantation, the land in Southampton County received in his father's will, half a patent in Southampton County, 2 slaves, still, worm, featherbed, and furnishings; (2) nephew John Lawrence, half a patent in Southampton County; (3) granddaughter Honour Ballard, slave, feather bed and furnishings, and £20 in cash; (4) granddaughter Ann Ballard, ditto; (5) daughter Ann Ballard and her husband Elisha Ballard who is to act as executor, 2 slaves and the rest of the estate. Witnessed: Hardy Lawrence, Joseph Lawrence, William Moore.
His will was probated on 5 January 1758.
