     Elizabeth Whitfield married John Smith [II], son of John Smith [I], in 1708.^1,2

     William Whitfield [I] was born in 1688 in Scotland.^2,3,1 He married Elizabeth Goodman circa 1713 in Chowan Co., North Carolina.² William died in 1770.³Evidently William's parents had returned to Scotland as William was born there. In the early part of the 18th Centruy, William came to the colonies on his own ship The Providence. He lived in Nansemond Co., Virginia, settled in Bertie Co., North Carolina after he married and later moved to Rockford, Lenoir County. He possibly was killed by Indians between Bertie Co. and Whitehall.¹

     John Smith [II] was born on 23 February 1689/90 in Middlesex Co., Virginia.¹ He married Elizabeth Whitfield, daughter of Matthew Whitfield [II] and Priscilla Lawrence, in 1708.^2,1 John died in November 1777 in Smithfield, Johnston Co., North Carolina, at age 87.¹

     Elizabeth Goodman was born circa 1697.¹ She married William Whitfield [I], son of Matthew Whitfield [II] and Priscilla Lawrence, circa 1713 in Chowan Co., North Carolina.² Elizabeth died circa 1773.¹

     William Whitfield [II] was born on 20 May 1715 in Nansemond Co., Virginia.¹ He married first Mary Copeland.¹ He married second Frauzan Mett Becton.¹ He married third Rachael Bryan, daughter of Needham Bryan and Ann ?, circa 1741 in Bertie Co., North Carolina.^2,3 William died on 31 March 1795 in North Carolina at age 79.¹William settled at a plantation called Rockford in Lenoir Co., North Carolina, sometime prior to 1743. He was a member of the Colonial Assembly, a member of the Committee of Safety as well as a member of the Council of the state in 1779. He was a prosperous planter and slaveholder and furnished supplies and ferriage for the patriotic cause. In 1743 he built "White Hall" in Seven Springs, North Carolina¹.

     William was an ancestor of Nathan Bryan Whitfield, who moved to Marengo County, Alabama. There Nathan purchased land from General Gaines, and built the famous "Gaineswood" estate which he named in honor of the General. The noted and ill-fated architect, Stanford White, said that Gaineswood was the "most exquisitely perfect country home" he ever saw.²

     Rachael Bryan married William Whitfield [II], son of William Whitfield [I] and Elizabeth Goodman, circa 1741 in Bertie Co., North Carolina.^1,2

     Needham Bryan married Ann ?.¹Needham was a Justice in Bertie Co., North Carolina in 1739 and a member of the Assembly 1739-50.

     He married first Unknown Rogers, daughter of Michael Rogers.¹ He married second Mary Lawrence, daughter of John Lawrence and Mary Power.¹John moved to Bertie County, North Carolina, where he made a deed to Colonel Thomas Pollock of 208 acres of land on the west side of the Chowan River, "right to said land by now wife, daughter of John Lawrence deceased." This was land patented by John Lawrence in 1663¹.

     Boddie states that the first wife of John Thomas may have been a daughter of Michael Rogers of Isle of Wight County.

     Margaret Murphy was born in 1670.¹ She married John Lawrence Jr., son of John Lawrence and Mary Power, before 17 November 1714 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.^2,3 Margaret died before 7 February 1750/51 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.^2,4Margaret Lawrence was called daughter in the will of William Murphy (wife Sarah Holiday) on 14 November 1717.⁴

     Margaret made a will on 26 September 1746 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. Margaret's will:

(1) son and executor John Lawrence, feather bed and furniture, both curtains, valance, bolster, pair of sheets, rug, blanket, long table, 3 leather chairs, small trunk, great chest, case of bottles, stone jug, small pot, great dish, small dish, half the linen wheel, and one-fourth of the cattle; (2) son William great iron pot, iron potrack, spit, dripping pan, stone jug, half the linens wheel, and one-fourth of the cattle; (3) granddaughter Penelope, feather bed, bolster, rug, and a pair of sheets; (4) daughter Priscilla, great trunk, looking glass, horse, bridle, saddle, hogs, corn, iron pot, pot hook and half the tobacco crop; (5) daughter Elizabeth, bed, bolster, pair of sheets, rug, blanket, trundle bedstead, half of the cattle, and half the tobacco crop; (6) grandson Robert Carr, twenty shillings in cash; (7) daughter Margaret Daughtry, five shillings in cash; (8) daughter Sarah Moore, gold ring, "Sunset Hood". Witnesses William Driver, John Loyd, and Giles Smelly.²

     Her will was probated on 7 February 1750/51.

     William Murphy Jr. married Sarah Holladay.^1,2 William died before 26 June 1721 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.³William Murphry made his will on 14 November 1717, and it was recorded on 26 June 1721.

     William Lawrence was born circa 1700.³ He married first Penelope Brown, daughter of Samuel Brown.^1,4 He married second Sarah Applewhaite, daughter of Henry Applewhaite and Anne Marshall, before 26 July 1746.⁵ William died before 2 June 1757 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.⁵William Lawrence lived in Newport Parish of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and deeded a slave to his sister Priscilla Lawrence, for love on 24 May 1739, witnessed by Jeremiah Lawrence and John Lawrence. On 7 October 1739, Dr. Samuel Brown's will mentioned granddaughter Penelope, daughter of William and Penelope Lawrence. On 27 July 1741, William Lawrence, Jeremiah Lawrence, and John Darden appraised the estate of Thomas Loyd, whose widow was Charity Loyd. On 28 April 1742, William Lawrence, William Moore, and Jesse Brown appraised the property of John Daughtry. On 24 March 1745, Charles and Ann Driver deeded to William Lawrence for £5/5/0 Virginia money 150 acres north of Blackwater heired from Ann's mother, Elizabeth Whitfield, who was a daughter of John Harris, adjoining James Baker and William Lawrence.

     On 12 February 1746/7, James Baker, Gent., sold William Lawrence for £35 current Virginia money 300 acres north of Main Blackwater which came from his father Henry Baker's will in Nansemond County, adjoining Braswell's branch, Robert Carr, John Lawrence, and William Lawrence.

     On 12 February 1746/7, William Lawrence sold to John Lawrence for £17/10/0 current Virginia money, 150 acres of the James Baker tract, witnessed by John Eley. On 5 October 1749, William Lawrence, John Lawrence, and William Edmons appraised the estate of William Brewer.⁵

     William made a will on 8 September 1756 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. William's will:

(1) daughter Penelope Lawrence, 2 slaves, bed quilt, large cedar table, side saddle, bridle, 1/4 of £40 in William Scott's hands; (2) John, son under age, Currawaugh land bought from Colonel Joseph Bridger (or else Bridger's bond money if the title is not good), all land in Southampton County, 3 slaves, still, cap, and worm, bed, rug, 2 sheets, bedstead, riding horse, new briddle and saddle, case of pistols, sword, musket gun, 10 cattle, 2 sows with pigs; (3) wife and executrix, Sarah, use of the Currawaugh plantation till John is of age, 7 slaves, chest of drawers, 6 chairs, 10 silver spoons, trunk, bed and furnishings, £20 in cash, horses, mares, saddles, bridles, and to divide the pewter and iron pots with John and Miles; (4) daughter, Molley Lawrence, 3 slaves, bed and furnishings, large oval table, 1/4 of £40; (5) daughter Ann Lawrence 3 slaves, bed, rug, 2 sheets, stead, oval table, 1/2 of £40; (6) daughter Sally Lawrence, 3 slaves, bed, rug, 2 sheets, cedar table and 1/4 of £40; (7) son Miles Lawrence, under twenty-one years, home plantation after his mother's death, the James Baker land across the branch, 2 guns, 10 cattle, 2 sows with pigs; (8) friend Richard Baker to get money owed by Thomas Davis in North Carolina, and said money to go to John and Miles Lawrence; (9) brother-in-law and executor Arthur Applewhite. Witnessed: John Darden, Jesse Watkins, and Joshua Councill.

     His will was probated on 2 June 1757. On 7 September 1758, the estate of the late William Lawrence was appraised by Daniel Herring, Michael Eley, and Joshua Council.

     Margaret Murphy Lawrence was born in 1703.³ She married first John Daughtrey, son of James Daughtrey [Sr.], before 1742 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.^4,5,2 She married second Thomas Langford after 1749.⁵

     Priscilla Lawrence was born circa 1705.³ She married Robert Carr.²

     Sarah Murphy Lawrence was born circa 1710.³ She married William Moore.^4,5

     Elizabeth Lawrence was born circa 1713.⁵

     John Lawrence was born in Nansemond Co., Virginia.^1,2 John died before 5 January 1758 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.^3,4On 25 February 1739/40, John Lawrence assisted John Bowin and William Fowler in appraising the estate of William Bradshaw. On 25 June 1744, John, John Johnson, and William Fowler appraised the estate of James Tullaugh. On 9 September 1749, John and William Lawrence and William Edmonds appraised Fowler's estate. On 6 August 1752, John Lawrence, Jacob Butler, and James Bryant appraised the estate of William Daughtry. On 5 June, 1755, John and William Lawrence and John Darden appraised the estate of John Daughtry.

     On 12 July 1770, Charles and wife Amey sold land to John Lawrence for £50. The land was described as "being in the County of Southampton on the south side of Black Water it being part of a pattein granted to John Lawrence the sixteenth day of December 1714 Bounded as follows: Beginning in the pattein line where George Lawrance's new line begins as bounds him and thence south __East along that new line to the Cattail Branch then along the said Branch to the Pattain line then along the said ____ distance to joyn the said John Lawrances one land and so along Lawrances Land to the Pattain line then along the Pattain on to the begining it is one hundred & fory acres ... as was given the said Charles Lawrance by his uncle Jeremiah Lawrance."⁵ I believe this John is the John Lawrence in this transaction.

     John made a will on 2 March 1757 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. John's will:

(1) grandson Elisha Lawrence Ballard, the home plantation, the land in Southampton County received in his father's will, half a patent in Southampton County, 2 slaves, still, worm, featherbed, and furnishings; (2) nephew John Lawrence, half a patent in Southampton County; (3) granddaughter Honour Ballard, slave, feather bed and furnishings, and £20 in cash; (4) granddaughter Ann Ballard, ditto; (5) daughter Ann Ballard and her husband Elisha Ballard who is to act as executor, 2 slaves and the rest of the estate. Witnessed: Hardy Lawrence, Joseph Lawrence, William Moore.

     His will was probated on 5 January 1758.

     Ann Lawrence married Elisha Ballard.¹

     Elisha Ballard married Ann Lawrence, daughter of John Lawrence.¹

     Elisha Lawrence Ballard was born circa 1755 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.¹Elisha Lawrence Ballard was appointed Lieutenant in Captain Mills Lawrence's Company of Isle of Wight County Militia on 5 June 1777. He was captured by the British and was paroled at Portsmouth on 18 January 1781.
