Robert Lawrence, immigrant to Isle of Wright Co., Virginia, circa 1638

Robert Lawrence was the son of Sir John Lawrence, Baronet, of London and his wife Grissel Gibbons. It appears that shortly after Sir John Lawrence died in 1638, Robert and his wife Elizabeth Adkinson immigrated to Isle of Wight Co., Virginia.

Robert and Elizabeth had four sons that have been identified, Robert Lawrence Jr., John Lawrence, George Lawrence, and Henry Lawrence. There is a vast amount of information on the descendants of Robert and John. Additionally, I have information on some of the descendants of Henry and some of the descendants of George.

I descend from both sons Robert Jr. and John. Robert Lawrence [III], son of Robert Lawrence Jr. married his 2nd cousin Sarah Exum, granddaughter of John Lawrence.

I have attempted to gather as much information about the descendants of Robert Lawrence the immigrant as I can into this one work that can serve as a reference for researchers of these Lawrence lines.

Daughtrey Family of Virginia

The progenitor of the Daughtrey families found in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and other states is believed to have been a James Daughtrey Sr. who can be found in Virginia in the mid to late 1600s. The surname can be found in records spelled Daughtrey, Daughtry, Daughtery, and other variations mispelled by record keepers such as Dauntry, Doughtry, etc. There were several marriages between the Daughtrey family and the Lawrence family in the 1600s and 1700s in Isle of Wight Co., Nansemond Co., and Southampton Co., Virginia. I have added information on Daughtrey families that has recently been shared among several researchers of the family and have further expanded on that information based on research of census records up through 1930. Please feel free to contact me with corrections and additions to this information.

My main concentration has been on the family line that I have traced back to a Thomas Daughtrey Sr. who settled in Northampton Co., North Carolina, and is a grandson of the above James Daughtrey Sr. His son, Jesse Daughtrey, was the father of Elizabeth Daughtrey who married Charles Lawrence in my direct family line. Thomas Daughtrey was married twice. First to Martha Lawrence, daughter of Henry Lawrence and Elizabeth Edey, and second to Mary Garland. The mother of Jesse Daughtrey in my line of descent appears to have been Thomas's second wife, Mary Garland.

Hardy Family of Virginia, descendants of John de Hardy of England

The Hardy family that settled in Virginia in the 1600s can be traced back to John de Hardy born in 1446 in Yorkshire, England. His descendant Richard Hardy with wife Alice Wilson and children immigrated to Virginia. Richard's son John Hardy and his wife Olive Council also immigrated to Virginia.

Lucy Hardy daughter of John Hardy and Olive Council married Hodges Council Jr. Their granddaughter Anne Council, daughter of Hardy Council and Susannah Fulgham, married Robert Lawrence IV thus our connection to this Hardy family. Whether Hodges Council Jr. was of the same family as Olive Council how married John Hardy Sr. is not known.

Since several branches of ancestors of this family trace back to the noble and royal families of England I have provide a 15 generation ancestral chart for Anne Council, wife of Robert Lawrence IV. See Charts.
