Thomas appears to have lived in Nansemond County or near the border of that county and Isle of Wight County. On February 6, 1667, he patented 179 acres in Isle of Wight and Nansemond Counties. Thomas and his wife Sarah of Isle of Wight County sold a parcel of land to in the Parish of Chuckatuck containing 179 acres by patent bearing date of February 6, 1667, to John Ison on May 29, 1678. Witnesses were Joseph Moody and Thomas Godwin. Thomas Exum and Edmund Godwin (son of Thomas) were witnesses to a deed of Henry Reeves of Rapahannock County to Thomas Godwin of Chuckatuck of 400 acres of land, part of a patent of 600 acres formerly granted Godfrey Hunt and by him conveyed to his deceased father Henry Reeves on the south side of Chuckatuck Creek called "Beaver Dam."
Thomas Exum was a Justice of the County Court in Isle of Wight County in 1692. He probably died in Nansemond County where the records were destroyed as there is no futher record of him in Isle of Wight.
