Narrative

Conflicting evidence states that Ever Ethel Lawrence was born in July 1889 at Tennessee.1

It is a mystery as to why Ever appears on the 1900 U. S. Census as Eva. All indications are that she died as an infant in 1890. The following quote from Peggy Miller, granddaughter of Mary Magalene Lawrence Miller, sister of of Ever, was provided to my by John Lawrence, grandson of William Arthur Lawrence, brother of Ever.

"She died in 1890. My grandmother told me personally that she (Mary) was about 10 years old when she rocked the cradle of Ever Ethel until she died from spinal meningitis. Ever Ethel was about 6 months old at the time. Again, my grandmother told me the story of the child's death herself when I was about 10 and I remember every word distinctly. She said the baby's head kept drawing back towards her spine and there was nothing that anyone could do to help her. It was a grizzly story for a ten year old to hear, but it had to have been more grizzly for a ten year old to witness and participate in herself. I've seen the transcription of Ever's tombstone which says 1896, but it is in error. I think the "0" of 1890 must have looked like a "6" or it's a simple typo. But the story my grandmother told me that Ever was 6 months old and that she was 10 years old fits the chronology exactly. I can even remember that I was sitting on the steps of my grandparents house and she was shelling peas when my grandmother told me the story. I was asking her about her family and her mother and dad and my grandfather's parents. My interest in genealogy started young but I sure wish I had asked more questions!
Thanks for straightening out the record."3
